Chiefs cancel OTA session after player suffers 'medical emergency' in team meeting

The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs canceled Thursday's organized team activities and media availability after a player had to be hospitalized.

A member of the club, characterized as a "backup player," suffered a "medical emergency" Thursday morning in a team meeting, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the circumstances.

Team doctors and trainers responded immediately to treat the player, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital. He's currently in stable condition.

Thursday evening, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the player in question was second-year defensive end BJ Thompson. Pelissero also reported that Thompson suffered a seizure during a special teams meeting and went into cardiac arrest before the team's medical staff managed to stabilize him.

“BJ is still unconscious at this point, but he’s stable and vitals are good. His family asks for your continued prayers,” Chris Turnage, Thompson’s agent, said in a statement to Pelissero.

The Chiefs are scheduled to have their final OTA session of the offseason Friday. Their mandatory three-day minicamp is scheduled to begin Tuesday before the club breaks for summer ahead of training camp and a 2024 season the players hope ends with the league's first-ever Super Bowl three-peat.
