Chris Sutton on why he senses big Scotland opportunity vs Germany but clash is NOT free hit

Chris Sutton reckons Scotland have a big opportunity to cause an upset against Germany - but warned it is NOT a free hit.

It's not much over 24 hours until Steve Clarke's side kick off Euro 2024 with a mouth-watering clash against the host nation. Julian Nagelsmann's side are of course heavy favourites to start with the three points but there is always a quiet optimism around our own national team these days.

Sutton has been spending time in Munich and he doesn't feel that the German public have high hopes for their team this summer. And he reckons that could play into Scotland's hands as they look to pull off a big opening day shock. But the Celtic hero has rubbished the notion that it's a free hit for Clarke's men.

"What an opening game it's going to be against Germany, " he told Sky Sports. "I'm over in Munich now and I just sense that there isn't a great expectation from the German public, which there normally is going into a major tournament.

"Scotland can view this as an opportunity. There are people out there who are thinking this is a free hit for Scotland; I don't view it that way. Under Steve Clarke, people will talk about recent friendly form. They've won one of the last nine games but they've had some tricky fixtures in there and tested themselves.

"We learned from qualifying that Scotland are a well balanced team. There are areas of concern at centre back and who he starts up front. I think he'll probably go for Che Adams. but I'm looking forward to the game and if Germany are slightly off it, then Scotland could get a positive result."
