Chris Weidman Reveals Neck Injury That Could Put Him Out 6 to 12 Weeks
News broke on Tuesday that Chris Weidman was injured and unable to challenge middleweight champion Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 on June 4 as planned.
At the time of his withdrawal, there was little information on the injury that forced Weidman from the opportunity to try and win the belt back from the man that took it from him. On Wednesday, however, Weidman posted on his Facebook page to explain what happened.

Suffering from “a large extrusion herniation, which was stuck on a nerve that shuts down the tricep and and forearm area,” Weidman explained that he was initially hopeful that an epidural might alleviate the herniation and allow him to fight Rockhold. As he met with several specialists, and even tried one epidural that proved ineffective, it became obvious to everyone but Weidman that his best option was to back out of the fight and have surgery.
Following the failed epidural attempt, Weidman's coaches and family intervened, opening his eyes to the realization that he would be unwise to fight. So Weidman finally relented, deciding he should give the UFC as much time as possible to find a new opponent for Rockhold.
There are a couple of options for surgery, which include either taking out the disc or fusing it. He is scheduled to meet with the surgeons on Wednesday to determine what the better option is. Depending upon which route they take, Weidman's recovery could be anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks.
“I am being told I'm going to need surgery. Either they take the disc out or they fuse it and I have to meet with surgeons today to figure out what they will do,” wrote Weidman. “The good thing is it is c6-7 which is low in the neck, so I will have full range of motion either way and will be back better then ever.”
At this point, the biggest concern for Weidman is getting the herniation taken care of so that he can stay on a timeline to fight at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York in November.
