Former England Rugby Union international Christian Wade is one step closer to his dream of an NFL career after signing for the Buffalo Bills.

The former Wasps winger left the Premiership club last autumn and has been training alongside NFL veterans and draft hopefuls in Florida as part of the league’s International Player Pathway programme.

The aims of the programme are to provide elite athletes from around the world the opportunity to train, develop and ultimately earn a chance to play in the NFL.

Twenty-seven-year-old Wade was one of four players assigned to the club, who will receive a roster exemption to include him alongside their 90-man squad for their offseason training camp.

“With the recent news I’m completely lost for words,” said Wade. “Every week that has gone by has exceeded my expectations.

He continued: “I didn’t really know what to expect from the process and have tried to stay open to all possibilities. I’ve tried to take every moment as it comes and hit it hard.”

Identified as a potential running back for the Bills, Wade’s 82 Premiership tries for Wasps make him the third top scorer in the competition’s history.

Wade was also capped for England in 2013 and was part of the British and Irish Lions squad to tour Australia that same year.

“For me this is another step closer to my dream and what I set out to achieve from the start.” Wade added. “It’s making me emotional thinking about the risk I took and the magnitude of the move. This has made that even more apparent. Every time I think about, I start to well up.”
