Rangers have stepped up their pursuit of Connor Barron by tabling an improved contract offer.

The Scotland Under-21 midfielder is a free agent after rejecting a new deal to stay at Aberdeen. One of the rising stars in Scottish football, Barron has attracted interest across Europe as several clubs battle it out for his signature.

Serie A side Hellas Verona are keen to offer the 21-year-old a chance to follow in the footsteps of Lewis Ferguson, Josh Doig and Aaron Hickey by moving to Italy but face competition from Gers and a host of English teams including Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle.

However, Gers boss Clement hopes to persuade the youngster that his future lies at Ibrox as he seeks to bolster his midfield options following the departures of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram. And the Daily Record reports that Rangers have ramped up their efforts to land the out-of-contract starlet by offering improved terms.

Barron's arrival would help boost Rangers' homegrown quota required by UEFA for European competitions. Aberdeen, though, will have their fingers crossed that Barron decides on a move outside of Scotland as they would be guaranteed a £525,000 compensation package. Should Barron commit his future to Govan, then Rangers would have to negotiate a fee with the Dons or the case would go to a tribunal.
