Argentina will look to win their second straight Copa America championship as the 2024 tournament kicks off this Thursday. Six North American teams and ten South American teams will be competing for the title.

With the 2026 World Cup taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, this year's Copa America could be a good indicator as to the type of atmosphere we can expect in two years. It could also be a great test for the North American teams against some of the world's most elite competition.

The U.S. Men's National Team will face its first real test since the 2022 World Cup, and perhaps some surprises are in store. Here's the full schedule for the 2024 edition of the Copa America tournament.

How does the Copa America tournament work?

The 16-team tournament begins with four groups of four, who will each play every other member of their respective groups once. Each team will earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.

Once each team has played every other member of their group once, the top two teams will advance to the knockout stage – three rounds of single-elimination matches that cannot end in ties. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, the game will go straight to penalty kicks. However, the finals of the tournament are different. In the finals, two 15-minute halves will be played after the 90 minutes is complete. If the contest is still tied afterwards, the game will go to penalties.

Has the Copa America tournament always worked this way?

No.

In 2021 (the most recent tournament), there were only ten teams involved in this tournament. Two groups of five participated, and only the last place finisher in each group failed to advance to the knockout stages.

Since 1993, when nations outside of South America were invited to participate in the tournament, it is most common for 12 teams to compete. 2016 is the only other time 16 teams competed.
