Former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh has praised her husband, writer Ian Kershaw, over the soap's acid attack storyline.

Recent scenes on the soap saw Ryan Connor become the victim of an acid attack after Daisy Midgeley's stalker Justin planned to attack her, Ryan stepping in to protect her and taking on the force of the attack as a result.

Julie – who played Hayley Cropper on the soap between 1998 and 2014 – tweeted her praise for the scenes, which were written by her real-life husband Ian.

"Away from home and only able to watch clips of tonight’s #Corrie written by my incredible husband @Iankershaw," the star wrote. "Weeping in a park in America. Outstanding work from cast and crew and director and Kersh just phenomenal."

Following the airing of the episodes, Coronation Street has received some complaints to Ofcom, with some viewers arguing on social media that the storyline is "too dark".

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod previously opened up about tackling the topic, saying: "We were keen to show the long-term reality for people who are subjected to this kind of attack.

"It is something we might often read about in the papers but perhaps don't fully understand, in terms of the depth and variety of effects it can have.

"As well as the medical impacts, we explore the social fallout of having your appearance profoundly changed, both in terms of your own ability to process that and how the wider world reacts to you. The story will at times be heartbreaking, but we felt it was an important one to tell."

Coronation Street has been working on Ryan's storyline with guidance from The Katie Piper Foundation and Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI), which both offer help and support to real-life survivors.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
