A HUGE opportunity awaits two Island League Division 1 clubs to get their hands on an important piece of silverware tonight (Friday) — the Isle of Wight Memorial Cup.

Ventnor take on High Park in the final, at the Peter Henry Ground, Brading.

In the recent past, some big Island names have lifted the trophy — Whitecroft and Barton Sports, Brading Town and, last season, Shanklin.

But Ventnor, who finished an excellent third place this season, after gaining promotion from Division 2 as champions last year, have some impressive recent history themselves in the Memorial Cup — winning it in 2017.

It is only occasion Ventnor have lifted it.

For their underdog opponents, High Park, also promoted last season, they have had a tumultuous season — finishing bottom, with a points deduction, and fined by the Hampshire FA for its poor disciplinary record.

But in the Memorial Cup, High Park, who play their home matches in Bembridge, have been outstanding — beating fellow Division 1 sides ECS, Northwood St Johns and, in the semi-finals, Vectis.

The club, formed three seasons ago, are in the first major cup final.

Tonight's final will see Ventnor as clear favourites, but High Park have belied their lowly position and will be keen to possibly end their season with an upset against the odds.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
