NEWPORT County AFC have made their first signing of the summer after bringing in left-back Anthony Glennon.

The 24-year-old has signed for the managerless Exiles on a two-year deal after leaving League Two rivals Grimsby.

Glennon came through the ranks at Liverpool and then signed for Burnley before heading out on loan to the Mariners and Barrow.

He signed for Grimsby on a permanent deal but, after two seasons at Blundell Park, will now start a fresh challenge in Newport.

Glennon, who made 21 appearances last season, will fill the void after the departure of loanee left-backs Adam Lewis and Matty Bondswell at the end of last season.

“I’m delighted to get going. It’s a deal that’s been in the making for a long time,” said the defender, a former teammate of midfielder Bryn Morris.

“I spoke with Huw [Jenkins, owner] and It was something that I was interested in right from the start, and I’m just buzzing that the deal is over the line now.

“I want to play every game, get into good form and hopefully help the team have a good season. Every time I’ve played at Rodney Parade I’ve really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is great and I can’t wait to get going.”

Glennon is County’s first signing of the summer, although experienced midfielder Aaron Wildig has signed a fresh one-year contract.

Chairman Jenkins, even while manager Graham Coughlan was in post, has been in charge of the summer recruitment and retention.
