Football supporters often like to keep an eye on their club’s former players and Liverpool fans are no different. They will have seen Reds past and present in action during the 1-1 draw between Scotland and Switzerland at Euro 2024 on Wednesday.

The Scots were captained as usual by Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. He had a decent game, firing some testing crosses into the Swiss box. But he didn’t have as much impact as Xherdan Shaqiri, Switzerland’s attacking midfielder who played 63 times for Liverpool between 2018 and 2021.

The man affectionately known as the ‘Power Cube’ by Reds fans scored a wonderful goal to tie the game after a heavily deflected Scott McTominay shot had given Scotland the lead. Shaqiri’s most memorable moments for Liverpool occurred against Manchester United, and even former Red Devil Cristiano Ronaldo can’t match the feat he achieved with his goal in Cologne.

The strike was the Chicago Fire player’s 32nd international goal. He is fourth on the all-time scorer’s list for the Swiss national team, behind Alex Frei, with 42 goals, Kubilay Türkyilmaz and Max Abegglen (both 34).

As Shaqiri is 32, he may not have time to overtake Frei. Either way, he won’t ever get close to Ronaldo’s international tally, which currently stands at a mammoth 130 goals, at least 22 more than any other player. It’s inevitably Lionel Messi leading the chase, though he is currently tied on 108 with Iran’s Ali Daei.

Shaqiri’s goal against the Scots took him into double figures for goals in major international tournaments. He is closer to Ronaldo in this regard in relative terms, though again the Portugal forward, with 22, has more than double his tally.

And there’s every chance the Al-Nassr striker will match Shaqiri’s latest achievement in due course. But as it stands the former Liverpool number 23 is the only player to have scored at the previous three World Cups and the last three European Championships.

Shaqiri appeared at the global showpiece tournament as far back as 2010, though he didn’t score in South Africa. Switzerland then didn’t qualify for Euro 2012.

But the diminutive attacker bagged a hat-trick against Honduras in Brazil in 2014 and he was up and running. Shaqiri scored once, against Poland, at Euro 2016, before netting a highly charged 90th minute winner against Serbia in Russia two years later.

With three goals at Euro 2020 – a brace against Turkey and one goal versus Spain – ‘Shaq’ was joint-seventh top scorer at the delayed tournament. He then scored against Serbia once more in Qatar which brought the veteran to Germany this summer and a chance for a niche slice of history. Shaqiri took it in style, to ensure Switzerland is all but certain to reach the Round of 16. Eat your heart out, Ronaldo.

Liverpool.com says: Shaqiri was a cult hero at Liverpool. His overhead kick against United endeared him massively to Kopites, and that was only in a friendly, before he settled Jose Mourinho's final game at the club with two goals in 2018. Hopefully Ronaldo fails to match his latest achievement.
