Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo confirms he wants to return to England

Cristiano Ronaldo has sensationally told a Spanish court that he wants to return to England, just days before his Real Madrid team take on former side Manchester United in the Uefa Super Cup.

Ronaldo was in court this week as part of the investigation into his alleged £13.25m tax fraud, and extracts from the session have been released by Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

One of the excerpts includes the Portuguese forward reportedly saying to the judge: "I never had a problem in England… that’s why I would like to go back to England."

Rumours about Ronaldo wishing to leave Madrid began to circulate in June when he reacted furiously to the original tax evasion allegations.

Ronaldo's frustration was such that the Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that he had made an "irreversible" decision to leave Real as a consequence.

A return to Old Trafford was thought to be his most likely destination, but United manager Jose Mourinho branded any deal for his compatriot as "mission impossible" and signed Romelu Lukaku for £75m instead.

Now though it appears that the switch could be back on, with Ronaldo seemingly keen on going back to the country where he spent six hugely successful years between 2003 and 2009.

Any deal for Ronaldo could hinge on whether, as expected, Real complete the £160 signing of French wunderkind Kylian Mbappe from Monaco. The likelihood of Mbappe moving to Spain appeared to increase on Friday night when Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim admitted he didn't know if he would be able to keep hold of the young striker.

“It’s important to keep all of the players who were important last season at the club," Jardim said.

"But down the years it has been shown that it is not always possible to keep hold of your players and you know how our project works.

"Therefore, our objective is to work with the players that are still here when the transfer window closes.”
