Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United has kicked off what is set to be frantic transfer deadline day.

The Portugal international signed a two-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further 12 months.

Juventus confirmed the deal with United first thing on Tuesday morning – revealing his £12.8million transfer fee would be payable over five years.

That means his sensational comeback will cost just £2.56m up front. And an official announcement from United came shortly after, with Ronaldo saying: “Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday.

“I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”

Talks are now underway to see if Ronaldo will be able to reclaim his famous No7 shirt, which has already been assigned to Edinson Cavani for the season.

The 36-year-old is the most spectacular signing of any Premier League club this summer in what has been a remarkable transfer window.

Manchester City made Jack Grealish the first £100m player in the history of English football, while Chelsea broke their transfer record to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club for £97.5m from Inter Milan.

Tottenham, meanwhile, shut down the biggest saga of the summer by resisting City’s attempts to lure Harry Kane to the Etihad in a £125m deal.

When the window finally shuts at 11pm BST on Tuesday night it will bring an end to one of the most dramatic summers of all time, with Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain, while Real Madrid have desperately pursued Kylian Mbappe – offering £154.4m for the France World Cup-winning striker.

Ronaldo is part of a powerful statement of intent from United in the transfer market, joining Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.

His arrival increases the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to win a first trophy as United manager and make a genuine challenge for the Premier League title.

Ronaldo returns 12 years after leaving the club for a then world record £80m fee to join Real Madrid.

He is expected to the highest-paid player in Premier League history on around £500,000-a-week. Based on his performances, United could have to pay another £6.87m in add-ons to Juve.

Solskjaer said: “You run out of words to describe Cristiano. He is not only a marvellous player, but also a great human being.

“To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level for such a long period requires a very special person.

“I have no doubt that he will continue to impress us all and his experience will be so vital for the younger players in the squad. Ronaldo’s return demonstrates the unique appeal of this club and I am absolutely delighted he is coming home to where it all started.”
