Dominik Livakovic saved Rodrygo's first spot-kick and Marquinhos hit the post to give Croatia a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Brazil on Friday after their highly entertaining, dramatic and thrilling 2022 World Cup quarter-final finished level at 1-1.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, Brazil took a 1-0 lead with a bit of extra time solo magic from Neymar but gritty Croatia refused to quit, Bruno Petkovic equalising in the 117th minute to send the contest to a shootout.
Neymar reached 77 goals and draw level with Pele as the team's top scorer, a record held by the Brazilian great for 51 years. The 82-year-old football icon, who is hospitalized in delicate conditions in Sao Paulo due to cancer, scored his last goal for Brazil in a friendly against Austria in 1971. Croatia now await the winner of Argentina and the Netherlands who clash later on tonight.

Full time! Croatia 1-1 Brazil

It will be penalties.

120+2 mins: Antony draws a foul in a good position and Brazil can swing it in again...
Neymar’s cross comes back with change and Livakovic saves again!
17:33 , Marc Mayo
120 mins: Two minutes added on.
Can there be a winner?
17:33 , Marc Mayo
119 mins: Croatia have the ball and Majer fancies a famous winner... wide!
17:32 , Marc Mayo
118 mins: For the record, Petkovic was booked for taking his shirt off. Not that he cares!
The clock is ticking before penalties.
GGGGGOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Croatia 1-1 Brazil | Petkovic
17:29 , Marc Mayo
116 mins: THEY’RE LEVEL!
Oh. My. Word.
Petkovic pops up after a swift move down the left and a deflected effort beats Alisson!
17:27 , Marc Mayo
114 mins: Antony now wins a corner off Majer, is he putting himself in position to start a World Cup semi-final?
Brazil are only six minutes away...
17:26 , Marc Mayo
113 mins: Some scrappy Brazil fouls are letting Croatia pin them in a little.
Antony does a lot better though, bumping off Perisic in a clean-and-fair battle to win a goal kick.
Brozovic off for Orsic.
17:24 , Marc Mayo
110 mins: Not a great corner routine from Croatia, who go short and loft a deep cross into Petkovic and he controls but is not great with the ball at his feet.
The chance goes.
17:22 , Marc Mayo
109 mins: Naturally, Brazil are sitting back now and asking what Croatia can muster given they have struggled to have a focal point in attack all night.
Modric does well to win a corner but big striker Budimir comes on before the delivery. Sosa off. Attacking change.
17:20 , Marc Mayo
106 mins: Croatia lob a free-kick into the box, a huge test of them now.
Watch Neymar’s goal:
17:18 , Marc Mayo
The final 15 minutes of the game and Brazil introduce Alex Sandro and Fred off the bench. Militao and Paqueta are replaced.
Croatia bring Majer on for Kovacic.
Half time in extra time! Croatia 0-1 Brazil
17:15 , Marc Mayo
Croatia have a go at a leveller but we have only 15 minutes left for them to find a goal when the match restarts...
GGGGGOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Croatia 0-1 Brazil | Neymar
17:12 , Marc Mayo
105+1 mins: NEYMAR!
The ball breaks for the Brazilian in the box and he dances around Livakovic before firing into the roof of the net. Stunning!
That’s his 77th international goal... level with Pele!
17:12 , Marc Mayo
105 mins: Danilo lets a hopeful effort fly well over the bar and we remain goalless in Al Rayyan.
Still no shot on target for Croatia.
One minute added on.
17:09 , Marc Mayo
103 mins: Brilliant tackle from Lovren on Neymar!
Petkovic then pulls off a sublime piece of skill to beat two defenders and tee up Brozovic... over!
17:08 , Marc Mayo
101 mins: There’s your moment of magic - or attempted magic at least.
A bouncing ball along the 18-yard line is acrobatically spun goalwards by the young winger, only for his feet to slip and the shot balloons up for Livakovic to grab.
17:06 , Marc Mayo
99 mins: Rodrygo hits an early cross in and Paqueta tracks it well, but meets a stern marking job from Sosa and he just fails to meet the ball.
17:04 , Marc Mayo
97 mins: Croatia happy to stand off the Brazil attackers and form a tight, low block in the box to repel balls in.
A number of crosses are expertly dealt with but there’s such little margin for error for them. Can a moment of magic unlock the defence?
17:01 , Marc Mayo
94 mins: Those bombastic runs forward from Croatia’s full-backs and midfielders are not really their gameplan as the clock ticks on.
How they attempt to grab the winner, bar slow build-ups of possession, is a big question for Zlatko Dalic.
Brazil have all the intent and Antony beats Sosa to win a foul.
16:59 , Marc Mayo
92 mins: A little injury worry for Paqueta, who went down earlier in the game, but he will hobble on after an awkward stumble.
16:57 , Marc Mayo
Here we go...
Croatia and Brazil locked in a stalemate.
Nothing more nervy than extra time at the World Cup
16:55 , Marc Mayo
Well, except maybe a penalty shootout.
Croatia no strangers to this scenario
16:54 , Marc Mayo
Each of their last FOUR World Cup knockout games have gone to extra time...
Full time! Croatia 0-0 Brazil
16:52 , Marc Mayo
90+4 mins: Antony clips a shot goalwards from 22 yards out and Livakovic holds it...
Extra time required!
16:49 , Marc Mayo
90+2 mins: A handball by Antony in Croatia’s final third allows them to take their sweet time on the free kick.
16:48 , Marc Mayo
90 mins: Four minutes added on!
16:46 , Marc Mayo
88 mins: An opening for Croatia but Petkovic dallies on the ball in the D and the moment goes.
It’s the underdogs enjoying the better finish to the 90 minutes...
16:45 , Marc Mayo
87 mins: A shot of a rather glum Ronaldo Nazario in the executive boxes, down in the stands behind the goal Brazil fans are only getting louder to urge their team onto a winner.
16:43 , Marc Mayo
85 mins: A touch of Brazilian nerves, perhaps? Vlasic drills a shot into the crowd and Brazil’s playing out from the back is subject to a lot of pressure.
Alisson punts it into touch to draw a big reaction from the Croatian fans and bench.
16:41 , Marc Mayo
83 mins: Lovely from Vlasic to run down the right and draw a foul, which sees Danilo somehow avoid a booking.
Richarlison off for Pedro.
16:40 , Marc Mayo
81 mins: Brazil fans are driving the atmosphere now and their team has all the attacking impetus.
Can Croatia hang on for extra time?
16:38 , Marc Mayo
79 mins: Croatia’s problems up front continue as Modric’s smart break reaches Petkovic and dies a slow, steady death as he labours on the ball and gets crowded out.
All Brazil as we approach the final ten minutes - Paqueta firing low and hard... and straight at Livakovic.
16:34 , Marc Mayo
77 mins: Modric draws a foul out of Marquinhos and that’s a booking for the Brazilian.
16:34 , Marc Mayo
76 mins: I’m hesitant to use the phrase ‘extra time’ as to not tempt fate for either team - but we are edging closer and closer to it...
In comes Neymar for another one-on-one down that left channel but Livakovic makes himself big to save again!
16:31 , Marc Mayo
73 mins: Antony makes his case for flop of the tournament and Michael Oliver shrugs off his case for a foul off Sosa.
He’s straight back up and chasing the ball down before Neymar slings in a wasteful cross.
16:29 , Marc Mayo
71 mins: Zlatko Dalic’s side have done a very nice job of quelling that Brazilian spell and the manager turns to his bench.
Vlasic, something of a West Ham flop, will enter the fray with Petkovic. Kramaric and Pasalic come off.
16:26 , Marc Mayo
68 mins: Casemiro enters the book, relatively tamely, for downing Kramaric. Good work by Croatia to calm the game down, it must be said.
16:24 , Marc Mayo
66 mins: Brozovic escapes a second booking for once again chopping Neymar. Up steps Casemiro for an ambitious free-kick, straight at the wall.
Brazil come again though and Paqueta catches a good bounce of the ball to fire at goal. Saved! Livakovic again to the rescue.
16:21 , Marc Mayo
64 mins: An interesting one from Tite as Vinicius Jr is taken off after a very quiet performance.
Real Madrid colleague Rodrygo replaces him.
16:19 , Marc Mayo
62 mins: Modric’s call for a foul by Brazil’s corner flag is waved by away Michael Oliver, he’s been content to let the game run, yet the South Americans cannot put a counter together.
A good period of Croatian pressure, this. Alisson easily latches onto a cross from Perisic.
16:17 , Marc Mayo
59 mins: A bit more end-to-end at this game opens up, Croatia not quite as fluent on the break as Brazil but happy to attack directly.
That should make for a fascinating 30 minutes coming up as both sides look to pounce for the opening goal.
16:13 , Marc Mayo
56 mins: Raphinha, another quiet night for him, is the man replaced by Antony of Manchester United.
16:12 , Marc Mayo
55 mins: Richarlison rolls a sweet ball into Neymar, he’s through on goal and Livakovic makes the save!
16:11 , Marc Mayo
53 mins: A fine ball out to Perisic from Juranovic lets the Spurs man cross well for Pasalic... but it’s just over his head and drifts into touch.
Tite is going to his bench, already!
16:10 , Marc Mayo
52 mins: Can Brazil build on that busy start to the half?
The South Americans come again but a poor pass allows Juranovic to run it out.
16:08 , Marc Mayo
50 mins: Now Croatia bite back, a corner floated in and Perisic rises highest... Kramaric is offside as he fires the ball across goal. Silva had blocked it anwyay.
16:06 , Marc Mayo
48 mins: Juranovic may have handballed it... but Michael Oliver is not told to check the monitor.
It dropped out the sky and hit the defender’s arm and would have been mighty harsh.
16:05 , Marc Mayo
47 mins: Loose touch from Sosa and Raphinha can scamper down the right, cutting the ball into the six-yard box and Gvardiol’s touch forces Livakovic into a save!
Brazil come again but the flag goes up as Neymar hits a shot into a defender.
16:03 , Marc Mayo
The second half begins for Croatia vs Brazil in the World Cup quarter-finals.
No substitutions at the break.
Here come the players!
16:01 , Marc Mayo
Will there be any changes ahead of the second half?
Half-time shirt swap, anyone?
16:00 , Marc Mayo
Luka Modric and Casemiro appeared to exchange pleasantries at the break.
15:57 , Marc Mayo
This is the third of Croatia’s five games at the World Cup to be goalless at the break. And the fourth for Brazil!
Fortunately, only two 0-0s have occurred at full time - both in Croatia games.
Second-half coming up...
Croatia undoubtedly the happier side
15:53 , Marc Mayo
Winning the midfield battle, the Adriatic side have generally been very comfortable in defence too. They could improve in attack, certainly getting Kramaric more involved, but another 45 minutes like that will hugely please Zlatko Dalic.
World Cup stats check
15:49 , Marc Mayo
The possession numbers tell a lot of the story, with Brazil barely edging control of the ball by 51 to 49 per cent.
Brazil have fired off five shots to three with three to zero on target. One corner apiece, eight Croatian fouls to Brazil’s six.
Half time! Croatia 0-0 Brazil
15:46 , Marc Mayo
Tight, quite tense and incredibly well-poised.
This World Cup quarter-final is a long way from being settled.
15:45 , Marc Mayo
45 mins: A scrappy end to the half and we’ll have one minute of injury time.
15:44 , Marc Mayo
44 mins: An issue for Brazil, Paqueta is holding his ankle and Michael Oliver, somewhat charitably, stops the play to ensure he’s fine. And he is.
15:42 , Marc Mayo
42 mins: Neymar stands over a free-kick, wide of the box to the left, and whips in a shot that tickles the Croatia wall en route to goal...
Livakovic sees it well and gathers the ball.
15:41 , Marc Mayo
Brazil are getting a lot of bodies forward but aren’t moving it quickly enough to cause any problems to Croatia. There’s a surprising lack of fluidity given their team sheet.
15:38 , Marc Mayo
38 mins: The main thing Croatia haven’t done is get Kramaric into the game.
Brozovic escapes his marker and lacks any real plan for what to do next, and ends up rolling a tame pass into touch.
15:37 , Marc Mayo
36 mins: A couple of glimpses in the Croatia box for Brazil yet they continually find themselves outnumbered.
All nice and tight from Zlatko Dalic’s side while Brazil are so wide in attack, too loose and flimsy.
15:34 , Marc Mayo
34 mins: Modric is having a really good game, ditto Kovacic in that Croatian midfield.
For the first time, the Brazilian noise is drowned out by some vociferous chanting coming off the Croatian end. Jeers from the Brazil fans follow.
15:31 , Marc Mayo
31 mins: Brozovic booked for sending Neymar to the ground with a cynical challenge having been nutmegged by the PSG star. Just couldn’t help himself, could he?
15:30 , Marc Mayo
30 mins: Celtic’s Juranovic has been fantastic. Another mazy run down the right ends with a crisp ball across the flanks to Perisic, who fancies a strike but sends his shot high and wide.
15:28 , Marc Mayo
28 mins: 20, 16 and 15 - the number of ‘pressures applied’ by Kovacic, Brozovic and Modric, respectively, on Brazil’s players.
That stat from FIFA underlines how strong Croatia’s midfield has been in stopping Brazil from controlling the middle third.
Nizaar Kinsella at Education City Stadium
15:26 , Marc Mayo
“In other news, I’ve just put a jumper on for the first time for reasons not related to the air conditioning. It might not be as cold as England but winter has sort of arrived in Qatar.”
Please send sympathy cards by care of Standard Sport to...
15:25 , Marc Mayo
25 mins: A booking for Danilo as he launches a very high foot towards Juranovic - winning the ball before clashing with the Croat.
Michael Oliver may have a more serious decision to make if he doesn’t get the ball, there, the dugout fuming at that one.
15:24 , Marc Mayo
24 mins: Croatia deal with Brazil’s first corner of the game and win a foul, enabling them to put a foot on the ball.
The European side have been good at taking the sting out of things.
15:21 , Marc Mayo
22 mins: Vinicius Jr, the only one who has really looked interested for Brazil so far, dribbles into a dangerous spot with a one-two via Richarlison and a goalbound shot is blocked well by Gvardiol.
Neymar pops up soon after and places an effort straight at the goalkeeper.
Some life in the Samba boys?
15:19 , Marc Mayo
19 mins: Kovacic thinks ‘why not?’ at the edge of the box, cutting inside with little pressure and firing a shot into a stout defensive block.
Nizaar Kinsella at Education City Stadium
15:16 , Marc Mayo
Brazil have started a bit sloppily and slowly. Casemiro is caught in possession by Modric who puts in another dangerous cross.
They might be strong favourites but the five-time winners have work to do against the 2018 finalists.
15:15 , Marc Mayo
15 mins: All Croatia right now...
Modric nicks the ball off Casemiro and dinks in a dangerous cross, which is headed out by Militao.
15:13 , Marc Mayo
12 mins: A sturdy foot from Pasalic as Neymar struggles to get into the game early on. Nice and controlled from Croatia.
Juranovic bombs on down the right and continues into the box as a good cross from Pasalic comes in, the right-back and Perisic queuing up...
Juranovic gets a weak contact and his shot goes wide!
15:09 , Marc Mayo
9 mins: A very speculative dink into no-man’s land from Modric allows Raphinha a chance to run into space but a sharp, professional foul cuts that down.
Croatia are quick to win the ball back after the free-kick, too.
15:07 , Marc Mayo
7 mins: Juranovic looks to pick out Perisic in a repeat of his fabulous header past Japan, but Militao beats him to the ball and wins a free-kick in the process.
15:06 , Marc Mayo
6 mins: Great stuff all-round as Brozovic and Pasalic create some space down the right before a sharp Militao interception wins the ball back.
Bags and bags of technical quality in the midfield today, Pasalic on Croatia’s right wing but dropping deeper to assist the likes of Modric. Perisic is wide left and will look to hover further out wide to stretch Brazil.
15:04 , Marc Mayo
4 mins: Vinicius Jr looks up to Juranovic for a first chance to run at the Celtic defender, which could be a key area for Brazil to exploit.
At the second attempt, a shot-cross is held by Livakovic.
