Crunchyroll is continuing to grow as the streamer has been added as a subscription service on Prime Video, making anime more accessible to viewers at home whether they are new to it or seasoned pros.

The streaming platform is the biggest database in the world for anime, simulcasting new anime as it's released in Japan and being the home of old favourites and the biggest hits. It is now available in the UK, US, Canada and Sweden through Prime Video.

For newbies to anime it might seem daunting to try and navigate such a vast collection, so Yahoo has put together a guide to the best anime to stream on Crunchyroll.

Spy X Family — What to watch if you're new to anime

Everyone has to start somewhere, and for anime Spy X Family is as a good a place to start as any because it's fun, it has great action and the music is good too.

A relatively new series, Spy X Family has taken the world by storm thanks to its adorable characters and action-packed story of a spy, Loid Forger aka Agent Twilight, who forms a fake family in order to execute a dangerous mission.

What he doesn't realise is that his "daughter" Anya is a telepath and his "wife" Yor is an assassin, leading to an array of amusing scenarios as Anya is tasked with doing well at an elite school so that Loid can get close to his target.

My Hero Academia — For Marvel fans

The anime closest to Marvel in tone and style is My Hero Academia, the show already has six seasons and so there is plenty to catch up on. Full of quirky characters and big action set pieces, the series is one to watch for those that like their superheroes.

My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy who was born without powers (known as Quirks) but still hopes to one day become a superhero, and when his idol All Might takes him under his wing Midoriya begins his quest to follow in his footsteps and become the world's greatest hero.

One Piece — For people who like pirates and are in it for the long-run

One Piece is one of the longest-running anime and manga series of all time, and also has a succesful Netflix series that brought new viewers' attention to the original.

If you are looking for a swash-buckling adventure on the high seas then One Piece is for you, it follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew's quest to find the fabled One Piece treasure so he can be named King of the Pirates. Prepare for the long-haul, though, because it is over 1,000 episodes long.

Attack on Titan — For those looking for a gritty, violent drama

Attack on Titan is as gritty as they come, the series just finished after running for 10 years so it's the right time to sit down and watch it without the long wait in between seasons.

The series is set in a dystopian world where humanity is being plagued by titans, and when his mother is killed in front of him Eren Yeager makes it his mission to destroy them all. This show is not for the faint-hearted though, it is brutal and unrelentingly violent.

Horror film fans should give the Junji Ito collection a watch on Crunchyroll, because the manga creator is well known for his terrifying stories which have been brought to life in a dark anthology series.

Jujutsu Kaisen — For the action fans

Jujutsu Kaisen is another recent big hit, and it is popular for a reason as it features a captivating story, intriguing characters and an action-packed plot. The series follows teen Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organisation who work towards eliminating curses, one of which Itadori is now host to.

Rurouni Kenshin — For those looking for their next period drama hit

There are many great period drama anime out there, and one of the best is Rurouni Kenshin which is set during the Meiji era in Japan.

The original anime was released in the '90s, and the story has been adapted into five live-action films, but the manga is currently being given a new anime adaptation that is airing now on Crunchyroll.

The series follows former assassin Himura Kenshin, a skilled swordsman who has sworn never to kill again but whose vow is tested when enemies new and old threaten the country's peace.

Bungo Stray Dogs — If you're into detective dramas

The detective drama is a staple of anime, much like it is in any genre, with shows like Detective Conan and Moriarty the Patriot being highlights on Crunchyroll. But we'll be recommending Bungou Stray Dogs.

Based on the manga of the same name, the series imagines a world where famous writers have supernatural abilities based on their work. It follows the Armed Detective Agency as they investigate a variety of events and enemies in modern day Yokohama.

Fruits Basket — For fans of rom-coms

Fruits Basket is both a great rom-com, it follows orphan Tohru Honda as she is swept up into the world of the Sohma family, some members of which are cursed into being one of the 13 animals of the zodiac (the thirteenth being the outcast cat).

A classic of the genre, the story was adapted into a new anime series from 2019 to 2021 which follows Tohru as she navigates high school life while discovering the secrets of the Sohmas in a moving coming of age story.

Psycho-Pass — For those that like Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell is one of the most iconic anime of all time, and those looking for similar sci-fi series should check out Psycho-Pass which also examines technology and what it means to be human.

The anime has five seasons so far, and imagines a world where even thinking about crime makes you guilty and a group of detectives are in charge with finding citizens who are about to become criminals before they can act upon it.

Cowboy Bebop — For those looking for a classic

If you're into Akira then chances are you like a classic, and where better to start than with Cowboy Bebop? One of the most iconic anime to date.

The series follows a rag-tag group who traverse the galaxy looking for fugitives so they can make money as bounty hunters. This series has an incredible soundtrack, charming characters and an unforgettable story that Netflix were unable to recapture in their live-action adaptation.
