Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says new signings will be made after appointing Patrick Vieira as the club’s new manager.

Vieira, who has signed a three-year deal at Selhurst Park, is tasked with kicking the club on from the foundations laid during Roy Hodgson’s tenure, which came to an end at the end of last season.

The Arsenal legend, who is yet to manage in the Premier League but has experience with New York City in MLS and Nice in Ligue 1, will be backed financially by his new employer and is set for talks with Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman over their summer targets.

With 11 players from last season now out of contract at the club, the chairman is well aware of the task on hand for his new manager.

“We have a lot to do to prepare in the coming weeks and I look forward to working closely with Patrick and Dougie in bringing in some new faces to help us all to a successful season,” said Parish.

“I’m delighted and excited that Patrick has agreed to join Crystal Palace as our manager following successfully learning his trade at the City Group, and experiencing positive managerial spells at New York City and then Nice, who he led to the Europa League.”

Vieira was not Parish’s first choice to succeed Hodgson. The Eagles saw talks collapse with both Nuno Espirito Santo - now the Tottenham manager - and former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre collapse at the last minute before going back to Vieira, who first held talks with the club in April.

The 45-year-old must make sharp decisions over the future of those out of contract. Gary Cahill, Joel Ward and Andros Townsend are expected to get new deals, the latter having a good relationship with the new manager having worked with Vieira for ITV during Euro 2020.

Palace are keen to bolster the squad this summer, too. The Eagles are keen to add a wide player this summer with Eberechi Eze out until the New Year having suffered an Achilles injury in the final week of the season and Wilfried Zaha pushing to leave once more.

The south Londoners are interested in England Under-21 and PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke, though they would face competition from across Europe with Borussia Dortmund having made enquiries as to his availability after selling Jadon Sancho to Manchester United. Palace are also keen to bring in a central defender and spark in midfield.
