Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise upon Curtis Jones after the young midfielder’s influential performance against FC Porto.

The academy graduate, 20, was excellent in Tuesday night’s 5-1 Champions League rout at the Estadio do Dragao, running the game from the middle of the park and providing multiple assists while also going close to scoring himself on more than one occasion.

Such a performance came after Jones netted a superb goal in Saturday’s wild 3-3 Premier League draw at Brentford - his first top-flight start of the season with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Harvey Elliott and Naby Keita all sidelined.

The last two matches have been a timely reminder of his quality with Manchester City set to visit Anfield on Sunday, though Jurgen Klopp revealed that he was initially doubtful for the European tie in Portugal due to a stomach issue.

“Curtis played a good game. He had some problems a little bit with the stomach before the game; they told me I need to keep an eye on him but I told him after the game whatever it is, keep it because it was really a good game,” Klopp said in his post-Porto press conference.

“He played a really good game, he was everywhere, he was involved in everything. Set up the first goal with a surprising finish, goalie cannot save it. In a lot of other situations he was really there - maybe not as spectacular as the offensive stuff, but defensively he played a top-class game.

“He defended really well, pressed from the blind side, a lot of things I liked a lot about his performance tonight. So, let's keep going, Curtis, it was not bad tonight.”
