Dana White Promises Dubliners a UFC Event Later this Year

Dana White Promises Dubliners a UFC Event Later this Year

Dublin went absolutely insane for the UFC 189 World Tour finale on Tuesday when featherweight champ Jose Aldo and hometown challenger Conor McGregor made the final stop on their two-week promotional whirlwind.

But it wasn’t the last of the UFC that Dublin will see in 2015.

While the raucous Irish fans wanted UFC president Dana White to commit to a mega-event at Dublin’s massive 80,000-plus capacity Croke Park, he wouldn’t commit to that. He did, however, promise that the UFC would bring an event to Dublin sometime later this year.

“We’re coming back to Dublin. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’re coming back to Dublin,” said White, noting the fervor of the Irish fight fans. “I’ve been doing this 15 years. The last event we did in Dublin was the sickest thing I’ve ever seen.”

The last event in Dublin was at The O2 last July. McGregor headlined the card, TKOing Diego Brandao before a crowd of 9,500.

White, however, gave no further details as to the UFC’s plans for Dublin. He didn’t reveal a date, a venue, or any potential fights, although he’d surely want to have McGregor on any Irish card if at all possible.

If McGregor were to defeat Aldo in July, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that he could host at Croke Park for his first defense, but there are complications outside of McGregor having to win the fight for that to happen.

White promised that Croke Park was still on the UFC’s radar, but reminded everyone that there are still some complicated regulatory hurdles to clear before the promotion could hold an event there. The most prominent is a curfew that would force the UFC to operate its event outside of its optimum schedule for a pay-per-view.

For now, Irish fight fans will have to be satisfied with the idea that the UFC will be returning to Dublin, and sooner rather than later.
