Dance, Pavey win wrestling regional titles

Feb. 5—RICHMOND — Regional qualifying wrestlers competed at Richmond Saturday in the IHSAA regional with a berth in this Saturday's semistate at New Castle. The top four in each weight class at the regional advance to the semistate.

Batesville's Damien Dance (40-0) and Rushville's Sam Pavey (29-9) won their respective weight class titles at the regional. A total of nine local wrestlers are moving on to the semistate.

Batesville

All five Bulldog regional qualifiers advanced to the semistate.

At 165, Dance continued his undefeated season by receiving a forfeit in the quarterfinal, pinning Milan's Kayden McClellen (1:55) in the semifinal and pinning East Central's Jaxsin Prater (1:10) in the title match.

At 285, Max Amberger (38-2) finished runner-up. Amberger pinned Cambridge City Lincoln's Charles Wadsworth (1:18) in the quarterfinal, pinned Centerville's Nathan Westover (1:41) in the semifinal before falling to Northeastern's Michael Henderson in the final.

Adam Brewer (27-10) advanced in the 120 class with a third place. Brewer defeated Centerville's Kyle Sheard 7-4 in the quarterfinal, fell to Franklin County's Cole Freese in the semifinal and defeating Milan's Lucas Richards 5-0 in the third place match.

David Maher (31-5) finished third at 157. Maher pinned Eastern Hancock's Taylor Conley in the quarterfinal, fell to Milan's Kaleb Wilburn in the semifinal and pinned Rushville's Denver Campbell (3:49) in the third place match.

At 215, Andrew Jones (25-7) finished fourth. Jones pinned Knightstown's Xavier Wilkinson (3:31) in the quarterfinal. Jones lost his next two matches to take fourth place.

Greensburg

Greensburg's Cayden Beagle (22-14) earned a trip to the the semistate at 106. Beagle pinned Eastern Hancock's Jackson Cook (2:41) in the quarterfinal to ensure a semistate berth.

Greensburg's Landin Shepherd (21-16) lost his opening round match at 132.

Rushville

The Lions had six wrestlers at the regional and advanced three.

Pavey (29-9) won the regional title at 175. Pavey pinned Tri's Carson Chew (3:29) in the quarterfinal, defeated Milan's Cameron Gilb 8-0 in the semifinal and defeated East Central's Travis Riley 6-2 for the title.

At 106, Briggs Tackett (33-7) finished runner-up. Tackett took a forfeit in the quarterfinal, pinned Greensburg's Cayden Beagle (3:17) in the semifinal and fell to Heather Crull of Northeastern in the final.

Denver Campbell (21-15) finished fourth at 157. Campbell defeated Shenandoah's Tate Sanders 12-2 in the quarter final. He lost a sudden victory match in the semifinal to East Central's Brody Wingate.

The other three Lions qualifiers — Blake Hunt (26-9), Kian Nash (15-13) and Pacey Dye (22-12) — all lost in the quarterfinal.
