Dara O’Shea Celtic transfer swoop as 'contact made' with Burnley for defender

Celtic are plotting a transfer swoop for Burnley defender Dara O’Shea, according to a report.

Brendan Rodgers is said to be a big fan of the Republic of Ireland international and is keen to land him, with contact already made with his club. However, the Clarets signed the 25-year-old from West Brom for £7million just last year and so it would take a significant offer to persuade them to let him go.

Rodgers wants to bring in proven quality to boost the Hoops team this season and aid them in the Champions League, and O'Shea is an international with Premier League experience, albeit in a relegated side. The Daily Record report that Burnley still see him as a key figure and any decision on an offer from the Scottish champions would have to wait until a new manager is appointed.

O'Shea played 33 times in the English top flight last season and previously had a campaign in that division with Albion. Other than that, he's played in the Championship as well as a season in League Two when on loan at Exeter early in his career. He has 26 caps for his country.

Celts are on the lookout for a centre half to partner Cameron Carter-Vickers despite Liam Scales' impressive breakthrough campaign. O'Shea is right-footed but it would be hoped he can slot in seamlessly to that left central position if he does end up signing.

The Hoops are yet to make their first summer signing and are also in great need of a goalkeeper, while a left-back, striker and midfielder are also likely to be on Rodgers' wishlist. He wants Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah back after their loans but it remains to be seen if deals can be struck with Benfica and Norwich.
