Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa has given his assessment of Darwin Nunez's talents as he described the forward as "extraordinary" in a glowing reference that will provide Arne Slot with cause for optimism.

The legendary tactician has worked with the Liverpool striker for a year, with the pair having teamed up once more for the 2024 edition of Copa America. The mercurial attacker appears to be flourishing under his international boss too - having scored twice so far for his country at the tournament.

Uruguay have been mightily impressive during their first couple of games in Group C, dispatching of Panama in a 3-1 win in their opener before a 5-0 drubbing of Bolivia in their second outing. Coming off the back of a mixed campaign at Anfield, Nunez has been in prolific form in front of goal, finding the net in both games.

The 25-year-old, who scored 33 goals in 96 appearances on Merseyside across his first two terms, has been in devastating form for his nation this year with five strikes in three games in 2024. Now, Uruguay head coach Bielsa has run the rule over his star man, waxing lyrical about the forward, saying: "Darwin is a player who does not need any type of support.

"You have to know what it means to play for Liverpool and who he competes with, and what his cycles were like, when he converted, when he stopped converting, why he stopped converting. These are things that he manages in proportion to the place he occupies in the football world."

Suggesting some areas where the striker may need to improve, the former Leeds United boss asserted: "The only thing that worries me is that he is able to do what he does in an extraordinary way as many times as possible, which is converting, defining, finishing the actions, choosing where he should direct the shot that provides the right conditions to execute it.

Ultimately, it was clear that Bielsa is convinced that Nunez has the ability to prove to be a reliable threat in front of goal for his country. Weighing up the player's ability to be clinical with or without service from his teammates, it was clear that the coach had the utmost faith in the forward to deliver.

He added: "I insist, it would be a contradiction for me to say that what has value are the goals because I am saying the opposite. What is the best way to accompany that where he does not need company because he has shown that he can solve it on his own? Trying to give him a lot of balls to score goals."

While Uruguay remain in the tournament, it appears that any conversations with new Liverpool boss Slot will likely be put on the backburner, however. The Dutchman confirmed that he has had limited contact with players on international duty, admitting: I've reached out to a few of them – all of them after Jürgen left, because I thought that was really important to be fair to Jürgen and be fair to the players.

"Because they had to end the season and I don't think I would be really happy if my successor would have called players before I left the club. And from there on I called a few others, but not many of them because most of them are in preparation, or at this moment playing, at the Euros, and some others are in preparation at the Copa America."
