England’s star batsman Dawid Malan has raised doubts about his participation in the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and the Ashes 2021-22. Dawid Malan has confirmed that he will be playing for Punjab Kings in the second leg of IPL 2021 but is unsure of the other two tournaments, that will follow the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League.
IPL 2021 is slated to be played from September 19 to October 15, 2021, in UAE. The tournament, which was suspended in May this year due to Covid-19 after witnessing 29 games, will see the remaining matches in the second leg.
Post the IPL 2021 finale on October 15, ICC T20 World Cup 2021 will commence at the same venue on October 17 and conclude on November 14 with the final. Post that, the popular The Ashes 2021-22 will commence in December in Australia.
The Only Guarantee We Have At The Moment Is IPL 2021: Dawid Malan
While speaking in a virtual conference post Day 2 of India vs England 3rd Test, Dawid Malan mentioned that he is unsure if he will be part of ICC T20 World Cup 2021 or The Ashes tournament.
“The only guarantee we have at the moment is IPL — we don’t know if we’re going to the World Cup and we don’t know if we’re going to the Ashes, so it leaves us in quite a tough situation. I think all possibilities but at the moment I’m committed to the IPL. Yeah that’s where I am at the moment. Nothing sort of changed at the moment, maybe we can reassess,” the left-handed batsman said.
Dawid Malan also said that there is no guarantee if he will be part of the England squad in ICC T20 World Cup 2021 or The Ashes 2021-22. Hence, he cannot give up on IPL 2021.
“Say you give up the IPL and you don’t get picked for either of the England squads, then you’ve given up the IPL. There is no guarantees at the moment, it (Ashes) is still a long way to go. There is five innings left in the Test series so far,” “…or if you go to IPL and then you get selected after you’ve gone to IPL, then you’re sat in the bubble for five-and-a-half months. Hopefully we can get some answers and we can find some time to get a rest out of these bubbles,” the 33-year-old player further said.
Meanwhile, Dawid Malan made a strong comeback in the Test after a gap of 3 years. In the ongoing India vs England 3rd Test at Headingly, the left-handed batsman scored 70 runs while batting at no.3 spot. He also put up a prominent partnership of 139 runs with Joe Root, with the latter slamming a century.
With 423-8 on the scoreboard on Day 2, England has managed a mountainous lead of 345 in the match. Earlier, England pacers bowled out India for just 78 runs in the 1st innings.
