Defenders, Eagles head into district tourney with two top seeds

Feb. 23—After claiming the top two spots at last weekend's Southern Sectional, Warrior Run and Line Mountain are seeking to continue their postseason success at the District 4 Class 2A tournament today and Saturday at Williamsport High School.

Each school owns two top seeds for the district tournament. Reagan and Cameron Milheim are at the top of their respective brackets at 145 and 152 pounds, respectively, are coming away with sectional titles. Both Milheims have only two losses on the season.

Overall, the Defenders will be entering 11 wrestlers into the district tournament. Another sectional champion for Warrior Run, Max Wirnsberger, is the second seed at 133.

As for Line Mountain, its top seeds are Brock Rothermel (114) and Nolan Baumert (139) after they won their sectional tournaments.

The Eagles have a total of six wrestlers participating in the district tournament. Bradyn Schadel (121), Dalton Schadel (152), Kohen Shingara (160) and Maxim Johnson (189) will be joining Rothermel and Baumert. Shingara will also receive a first-round bye after winning first place at sectionals.

After Warrior Run, Mifflinburg advanced the most wrestlers to districts with a total of seven. Three of those, Jack Gramly (107), Bradley Wagner (121) and Ben Straub (127) won gold medals at sectionals and will receive byes in the first round.

Like Line Mountain, Midd-West and Southern Columbia will each enter six wrestlers to districts. The Tigers ended up with two sectional champions in Garrett Garcia (189) and Jude Bremigen (285). Garcia is undefeated at 24-0.

Milton and Lewisburg both qualified five wrestlers, while Mount Carmel enters three. Danville has two wrestlers in Sam Meloy (160) and Troy Raup (215) while Chase Pensyl (145) is Shamokin's only representative.

The top six finishers in each weight class will advance to next week's Northeast Regional, which will also take place at Williamsport.

Braves, Seals gear up for Class 3A regional

A total of 25 wrestlers representing Shikellamy and Selinsgrove will seek to punch their tickets to the state tournament during the Class 3A Northwest Regional today and Saturday at Altoona High School.

Shikellamy advanced its entire lineup of 13 wrestlers to regionals for the second consecutive year. Five of them, Alex Reed (121), Cole Wetzel (160), Connor Wetzel (172), Brody Rebuck (215) and Preston Spontarelli (285) were district champions. All five earned top-two seeds and received first-round byes.

Selinsgrove has 12 wrestlers who'll look to clinch a trip to Hershey. The Seals crowned three district champions last weekend in Alex Kadryna (127), Trent Turner (145) and Tucker Teats (189). Teats owns the top seed at 189 while Kadryna and Turner own second seeds in their respective brackets.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the PIAA state tournament in Hershey. The Northwest Regional features wrestlers from Districts 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

Five to be inducted into D4 Hall of Fame

The District 4 Wrestling Coaches Association will induct five new members to the District 4 Wrestling Hall of Fame. R. Barry Beilharz, Denny Harer, Eric Hess, Derrick Morgan and Dave McCormick are set to be inducted prior to the Class 2A finals in Williamsport on Saturday. Sam Eck and Mike Sees round out the 2024 class and were inducted during the Class 3A tournament last weekend.

Beilharz was instrumental in forming Line Mountain's wrestling program and served as its head coach for 12 years. As coach, Beilharz compiled a record of 71-43-2 and coached the Eagles to their only undefeated season.

Harer currently serves as Montgomery's head coach, where he's lead the Red Raiders' program to 74 dual meet wins. Overall, Harer holds a record of 305-99 with 231 of those wins coming as Muncy's coach. Harer has coached 22 state medalists and five state champions.

As a wrestler, Harer was a two-time state medalist, compiling a 129-12-1 record during his four-year career with Montgomery.

Hess posted a 154-13 record during his time at Benton, leading the Tigers to the PIAA Class 2A title in 2010. Hess was also pivotal to the 2008 and 2009 teams that finished in second place. Individually, Hess was a three-time state medalist and a two-time state champion.

Hess attended Lehigh University, but was unable to compete as a wrestler there due to complications from a cancer diagnosis. Hess currently serves as the Executive Director of the National High School Coaches Association.

Morgan compiled a career record of 115-19 at Athens. In 2002, Morgan earned a state title to finish the season 40-0. Morgan attended Lock Haven where he was a team captain for three years and an NCAA qualifier in 2006.

McCormick was a two-time NCAA Tournament qualifier while competing at the U.S. Military Academy. McCormick was also a two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association runner-up. McCormick attended Bloomsburg High School where he finished in fourth place at states in 1983.

After his wrestling career, McCormick became a CEO and served in George W. Bush's administration. McCormick is currently a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Eck earned a 112-23 record for Jersey Shore where he finished as a state champion in 2006. Eck wrestled at Penn State before transferring for Bloomsburg where he was a member of the football team for three years. Eck was also a three-time state medalist in the javelin for Jersey Shore.

Sees ended up with a record of 116-24 for Shikellamy where he finished second in the state tournament in 2003. During the same year, Sees was a National High School runner-up. Sees then wrestled at the collegiate level at Bloomsburg where he ended his career with a record of 113-20. Sees was a two-time Eastern Wrestling League champion and a four-time NCAA Tournament qualifier for the Huskies.
