Derby County will be hit with a 12-point deduction on Wednesday after formally appointing administrators to try and save the crisis-hit club.

With administration now to be confirmed, Derby will be docked a dozen points and will drop to the bottom of the Championship table.

Derby’s short-term future will rest in the hands of Andrew Hosking from business advisory firm Quantuma, who have offices in London and Manchester.

Hosking is listed as an expert in financial restructuring and insolvency on the Quantuma website and his appointment was supported by Derby’s major creditor MSD, the investment group based in New York linked to American billionaire Michael Dell.

He will now sift through Derby’s finances and attempt to find a buyer, though hundreds of jobs at Pride Park remain at risk.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, Derby have significant debts and owe a staggering £26 million to HM Revenue and Customs.

Phillip Cocu, the former Derby manager, and his backroom staff are also owed around £5m in compensation.

Any prospective buyer will have to take on those liabilities and accept funding a club which is threatened by relegation to League One.

There is also a further nine-point sanction hanging over Derby for breaching financial rules, due to their long-standing legal row with the EFL.

Derby’s administrators, or a new owner, must decide whether to accept that punishment or risk going before an independent disciplinary commission which could decide on even heavier sanctions.

In addition, Derby will also be docked another three points if they fail to pay their players and staff this month, with pay-roll approaching next week.

Wayne Rooney, the former England and Manchester United striker, is set to hold talks with the administrators on Wednesday.

Derby face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.
