Did Lawrence Shankland and Tony Ralston do enough to be in Scotland XI for Germany? Analysis and man-bys

The last warm-up game for Euro 2024 proved to be eventful for Steve Clarke and his Scotland team.

Finland were the visitors to Hampden and while the first half was a pretty drab affair, the Scots were on top and did manage to create some chances. It wasn't until the second half that the Tartan Army were properly given something to cheer though and two came along at once.

First, more good play from Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson ended with the skipper flashing one across goal for Arttu Hoskonen to turn into his own goal. Minutes later, Lawrence Shankland got the goal he would have been desperate for ahead of the proper stuff next week.

Just when it looked like we were heading off to the tournament with good feeling generated, the Fins pounced twice late on. Benjamin Källman struck first and the equaliser was controversial as Craig Gordon, becoming Scotland's oldest player on his 75th cap, had a penalty given against him and Oliver Antman beat him from the spot.

Clarke's selection tonight gave us a flavour of what he's thinking for next Friday night against the Germans, but there are still at least two places up for grabs. Here, Football Scotland analyses whether Shankland and Tony Ralston did enough to start at centre forward and right wing-back.

Lawrence Shankland

The striking berth is a tough one to call. The Hearts captain doesn't seem to carry the same air of confidence or 'I'm the man' swagger at international level as he does for his club. Didn't do a lot wrong but you just feel he had to do more to win a place in the starting XI for the opening game of the Euros. A number of good touches and link moments with his midfielders but not the same, almost constant, goal threat as he is for the Jambos. His effort with the outside of his right boot from the edge of the box was the type that has flown in when wearing maroon but those ones didn't come off for him here. All that said, he stuck the ball in the back of the net with a header so would argue he did his job. Still hard to shake the feeling that Che Adams should, and will, line up against the Germans. It could all hinge on the fitness of the Southampton man though, as he didn't even make it off the bench this evening.

Tony Ralston

Did he do enough? In short - yes. Ralston is what he is at club and international level, that being reliable and dependable. Didn't do anything wrong defensively that would make the manager have any doubts and got up and down the pitch willingly to try and support attacks. In fairness Ross McCrorie was the same against Gibraltar but don't bet against Ralston being in the eleven for the competitive stuff.

Scotland man-bys: Gunn 6, Hendry 6, Hanley 6, Tierney 8, Ralston 6, Gilmour 7, McGregor 7, Robertson 7, McGinn 7, Christie 8, Shankland 7.
