Diogo Jota and the Portugal team had their Euro 2024 preparations thrown into disarray when fans invaded the pitch during an open training session.

Roberto Martinez's squad, one of the favorites to clinch the European Championship in Germany this summer, is not set to play until Tuesday night against the Czech Republic in Leipzig.

In the lead-up to their first match, fans were invited to observe the team train at their tournament base in Westphalia. A total of 6,000 complimentary tickets were distributed for the session, but an estimated 8,000 supporters reportedly showed up.

The event spiraled into chaos as around 12 fans dashed onto the pitch, drawing boos from the spectators. Unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo was the player most sought after by the pitch invaders.

Security personnel raced after the intruders in an attempt to remove them, with some managing to evade capture. Ronaldo even posed for a selfie with one fan before they were escorted away. The forward then appealed for calm.

In a surprising turn of events, Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa took it upon himself to tackle one fan to the ground, sprinting halfway across the pitch to do so.

Once the session resumed, Liverpool striker Jota was playfully booed by fans when he knocked Ronaldo to the ground while vying for the ball. At the conclusion of the training, the Portugal team unfurled a banner that read 'Thank you, Germany' in both Portuguese and German.

Liverpool.com says: It is incredible how Ronaldo mania still persists even as he reaches the twilight of his career. It will be interesting to see what kind of role he plays at the Euros.

Portugal is among the favorites, but inevitably there will be a lot of attention on Ronaldo. They have often looked better without him in the side in recent times, but it takes a brave man to drop him and face the inevitable wrath from his superfans.

Jota is among those who could displace him, although the Liverpool star may well have to be patient for his opportunity at the tournament.
