Diogo Jota jeered after Cristiano Ronaldo clash as Portugal training session descends into chaos

Diogo Jota and Portugal saw their Euro 2024 preparations disrupted as fans stormed the pitch at an open training session.

Roberto Martinez’s side, who are one of the favourites to win this summer’s European Championship in Germany, aren’t in action until Tuesday night when they take on Czechia in Leipzig.

Ahead of their opening clash, supporters were invited to watch the train at their tournament base in Westphalia. A total of 6,000 free tickets were given out ahead of the session, though 8,000 fans reportedly turned up to attend.

But it descended into chaos as a number of supporters, said to be around 12, sprinted onto the pitch and were booed by those watching on, with Cristiano Ronaldo inevitably the player most tried to approach.

Security staff sprinted after those that encroached the pitch and tried to remove them, as some evaded their effort. Ronaldo posed for a selfie with one pitch invader before he was escorted away. The forward would then call for calm.

Meanwhile, Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa took matters into his own hands as he sprinted halfway across the pitch and rugby-tackled one fan to the ground.

After the session resumed, Liverpool forward Jota was jokingly jeered by supporters when he pushed Ronaldo to the floor when challenging him for the ball. At the end of training, the Portugal squad unfolded a banner declaring, ‘Thank you, Germany’ in both Portuguese and German.
