Diogo Jota ranks Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes above Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez

Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota knows a thing or two about finishing. He showed it last night for Portugal, getting in the right position for a poacher's effort, although an offside against Cristiano Ronaldo in the build-up ultimately denied him his goal.

Injuries prevented him from playing a massive role at club level last year, but the numbers show that he was statistically by far the most clinical among the Liverpool forwards when fit, significantly outperforming both Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez. And it seems Jota is aware of that fact.

Asked by Goal to compare his shooting to that of his Liverpool colleagues ahead of Euro 2024, Jota put himself top of the list, above Salah and Nunez. He was then asked to do the same with Portugal teammates Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

Jota reversed his order, putting himself bottom of the list. He placed Ronaldo top, putting Manchester United playmaker Fernandes in second place.

"Oof! I might have to go last here," Jota admitted. "Cristiano, Bruno and me."

The interviewer then pointed out that Jota is clinical on both feet, but the Liverpool forward was not swayed. He insisted that Ronaldo and Fernandes are also strong on both sides.

Extrapolating, Jota's ultimate order goes something like this: Ronaldo, Fernandes, Jota, Salah, Nunez. It's not exactly a ringing endorsement of his Liverpool teammates — albeit admittedly up against stiff competition.

But perhaps the main takeaway is where Jota ranks himself among the finishers at Liverpool. New head coach Arne Slot will certainly be hoping to get a sustained run out of the Portugal forward, because the 27-year-old is demonstrably correct — right now, he is the most clinical forward at the club, and by a distance.

Last season, Jota put away 10 Premier League goals from just 5.3 expected goals (xG), a remarkable overperformance. He was outstripping his xG to the tune of 0.37 extra goals per 90 minutes.

Salah posted 13 non-penalty goals, but that came from 15.5 xG, an underperformance of 0.09 xG per game. Nunez underperformed by 0.2 xG per 90.

Neither Cody Gakpo nor Luis Diaz could match their xG tallies either, although the Dutchman came closest. Some big decisions undoubtedly await Slot.

Liverpool.com says: Jota was adding value to his chances at a greater rate than Nunez was taking it away. It truly was a ruthless season in front of goal for 'the slotter', and it's hard not to wonder what might have been if Jurgen Klopp had been able to more reliably call upon him.

Of course, one possibility is that Jota would have reverted to something closer to the mean. But his finishing record across his time at Liverpool is impressive, and he has all the attributes to be a key player under Slot if he can stay fit.
