Several summer transfers have happened, including Tottenham Hotspur agreeing to take Timo Werner on loan again. But none of those moves can become official until the window opens.

Signing announcements can be done whenever, but clubs cannot register players outside transfer windows. Unregistered players are ineligible to play competitive matches for their teams.

That includes free agents, such as Tosin Adarabioyo, who does not become a Chelsea player until 1 July, the day after his Fulham contract ends. The gap between the winter window closing and the summer one opening is the longest of the year, spanning over four-and-a-half months, weeks longer than summer to winter. But the wait from 1 February is almost over, and agreements will soon become official.

When does the summer transfer window open?

The summer transfer window for Premier League and English Football League (EFL) clubs opens on 14 June, the same day the European Championship begins with the hosts Germany playing Scotland. As for the Women's Super League ( WSL ), the window opens ten days later on 24 June.

But both dates are before the windows in Europe's other top five leagues open. Over in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, 1 July is the day that moves go through.

When does the summer transfer window close?

Unlike when they open, windows across the top five leagues close on 30 August. In the WSL, clubs have an additional fortnight until 13 September.

But the time that business ends does differ across countries.

In England (including the WSL), 11pm is the cut-off at the same as in Spain. But in France, it is an hour earlier at 10 pm, while in Germany (5pm) and Italy (7pm), they wrap up proceedings in the evening without deals dragging late into the night as deal sheets allow in England.
