Dominic Calvert-Lewin 'involved in swap deal talks' after Newcastle star 'refused' to move

It's been revealed that a deal to take Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle fell through after the Magpies could not sell striker Callum Wilson.

After months of monitoring the Everton goalscorer, Newcastle eventually made their move and an agreement that would have seen Calvert-Lewin make a switch to St. James Park was believed to have been discussed in detail between the two clubs. The initial understanding was that the Magpies' young winger, Yankuba Minteh, would join the Toffees in return.

However, in what was a late twist, Telegraph Sport revealed that talks collapsed after Newcastle could not find a buyer for Wilson, and any deal to take Calvert-Lewin to the North East was swiftly dismissed. It's believed that Magpies boss Eddie Howe did not want three specialist centre-forwards in his squad for the upcoming season and, with no buyer for Wilson in sight, called off the deal.

Newcastle's decision to end their interest in Calvert-Lewin meant any talk of Minteh joining the Toffees was also put to rest. It's understood that Newcastle were willing to sell Minteh to Everton and the Gambian national was also interested in linking up with Sean Dyche.

The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Feyenoord and caught the attention of many clubs across the continent. The winger was highly-sought after following the impressive loan spell and it's believed teams such as Marseille, Borussia Dortmund and Roma were all interested in the player's signature.

With Newcastle having to sell or face the prospect of a possible points deduction, a £40million deal for Minteh to join Lyon had been agreed the week before the PSR accounting deadline, but the winger refused to go to France. Despite the player's interest in joining Everton it was ultimately Brighton who came in for Minteh who clinched the winger for £33million last weekend.

Any deal for Minteh was heavily reliant on Calvert-Lewin heading in the opposite direction with Newcastle’s steep price tag for the player firmly taking Everton out of the running in a normal buying capacity. Both clubs have had major concerns over their position in regards to Profit and Sustainability Regulations, and a swap deal could have granted Everton and Newcastle to add big names to their squad without falling foul of the regulations in place.

Calvert-Lewin was Everton’s top scorer with eight goals last season, and is one of only four players to have netted 50 or more times in the Premier League for the club. The striker has one year left on his current contract but the ECHO understands that Goodison Park chiefs have offered him a new deal.
