Dominik Szoboszlai was at the heart of worrying scenes in Scotland vs Hungary in Euro 2024. Barnabas Varga hit the deck after a heavy collision with goalkeeper Angus Gunn, ultimately being stretchered from the field of play — following a heroic act from the Liverpool man.

Captain of his national team, Szoboszlai was left visibly upset by the incident. Players from both sides were gathered around Varga as he lay in the Scotland penalty area.

And as medical staff came onto the pitch, Szoboszlai sprinted over to the stretcher team. He grabbed hold of it himself, urging the team to bring it over to the stricken Varga more quickly.

Varga did receive medical attention promptly, and after a lengthy delay, was taken off the pitch on the stretcher Szoboszlai had helped bring to him. The match then restarted in these unusual circumstances, with the players having been clearly shaken up.

But they had to put Varga to the back of their minds, with both of the sides essentially needing a win to keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive. The long stoppage sent up a chaotic finish, with attacks becoming frequently frantic as the match descended deeper into 10 minutes of added time.

Szoboszlai had a presentable chance to win it for Hungary, advancing into the Scotland box but only able to shoot straight at Gunn. Meanwhile, the Scots had plenty of opportunities of their own, but former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi stood strong in goal.

That proved to be critical as the game ticked into the 10th added minute, when Kevin Csoboth scored a dramatic late winner to keep Hungary's hopes of staying at Euro 2024 alive. A sliding Szoboszlai was unable to make the decisive contact, but his teammate was on hand to convert.

Scotland was almost certainly heading out anyway with the scores level, but that goal confirmed its elimination. It means Arne Slot may well need to wait a little bit longer to link up with Szoboszlai, but Robertson should be reporting for duty in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile, all of our thoughts of course remain with Varga. It did seem almost fitting that Hungary found the dramatic late winner after the trauma of watching his injury, and we'll bring you any updates on his condition as we get them. We know from the BBC broadcast that he has been taken to hospital following the incident, and that he is now stable and conscious.
