Dominik Szoboszlai makes 'difficult' Liverpool admission and reacts to being dropped by Jurgen Klopp

Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted he needs to improve for Liverpool next season.

The Hungarian joined the Reds in a £60m deal from RB Leipzig last summer and enjoyed a blistering start to life at Anfield. However, he struggled during the second half of his maiden campaign as he was troubled by a hamstring injury and found himself dropped to the bench.

Recording seven goals and four assists from 45 appearances, the 23-year-old has admitted his first season with Liverpool was a difficult one. And while he insists he wasn’t dissatisfied with his performances, Szoboszlai has conceded he needs to improve under new head coach Arne Slot.

“I've just finished a difficult season,” the 23-year-old said at a press conference. “But since this was my first in the Premier League, I'm not dissatisfied with my performance, although I definitely want to have a better season next time.

“I usually think positively, so it didn't bother me that I played a smaller role at Liverpool at the end of the season. At least the chance of injury was lower and I could focus on the European Championship earlier.”

Speaking ahead of Hungary's Euro 2024 opener against Switzerland this afternoon, Szoboszlai also paid tribute to his departing manager at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, admitting it was an honour to play under the German.

"It was an honour for me to be able to train and play under him,” Szoboszlai told Bild. “He is a very good coach and an even better person.

“I am very grateful to him for what I learned from him on and off the pitch. Not a single player can say anything bad about him because he always saw only the player and did everything for the team."

Szoboszlai became the youngest captain in European Championship history when he led Hungary out in their Group A opener against Switzerland, who raced into a two-goal lead through Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer. Szoboszlai then helped reduced the deficit when his curling cross was turned home by Barnabas Varga before Breel Embolo sealed a 3-1 win for Switzerland, who face hosts Germany next. Szoboszlai's Hungary will take on Andy Robertson's Scotland.
