Doris Day’s Iconic California Estate Is for Sale and the Proceeds Support Her Animal Foundation
Screen icon and singer Doris Day's longtime home in California's Carmel Valley is for sale for the very first time, and the proceeds are supporting a very good cause: helping animals.
In addition to being American's sweetheart, Day was also a dedicated animal activist. According to the Wall Street Journal, Day "loved dogs so much she prepared their food in a dedicated dog kitchen with tiny dog beds draped in Ralph Lauren sheets." All proceeds from the sale of the 8.62 acre property will benefit the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which was founded in 1978.
The sprawling estate boasts 12,400-square-feet divided between a butter-yellow main house, guest house, three "lofts," two caretaker units, and a caretaker's office. Likely to draw your attention is the iconic spiral staircase featured in "The Doris Day Show," which ran from 1968-1973. Other amenities include a spacious living room with a Carmel stone fireplace, a library, and patios and decks with beautiful views of the valley.
The property also has a 100-square-foot enclosed “cattery" and a large dog-care area with its own kitchen, which will keep your pets cozy. In addition to owning a pet-friendly piece of history, you can also keep Day's legacy alive. The Doris Day Animal Foundation is currently assisting rescue efforts for animals impacted by the wildfires in California, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The asking price for Day's former home is $7.4 million, and the listing is held with Doug and Lisa Steiny of Sotheby’s International Realty Carmel Rancho Brokerage.
