Borussia Dortmund vs Manchester City - LIVE!

Borussia Dortmund drew 0-0 with already-qualified Manchester City on to book their spot in the Champions League knockout stages with a game to spare. The result made sure City will top Group G while Dortmund locked down second spot ahead of third-placed Sevilla, who saw their hopes of playing Champions League football in the New Year ended.

The Germans had their moments on the counter with City failing to get a shot on target in the first half and top striker Erling Haaland, who had scored 86 goals in 89 matches for Dortmund until his departure in the summer, was taken off at halftime.

The visitors squandered their best chance in the 58th minute when a Riyad Mahrez penalty was saved by Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, with the Algerian now missing penalties in consecutive European matches after failing from the spot against Copenhagen a fortnight ago.

Well that... wasn’t great. Riyad Mahrez’s missed penalty summed it up.

No surprise really, a point suited both teams and a point is what both teams have got.

Man City through as group winners, Dortmund confirmed as runners-up in Group G and also through to the knockout stages.

21:48 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Stones with the ball over the top, Palmer can only flick it into the arms of Kobel.

Three minutes added on at the end of the match.

21:45 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Home fans have created a brilliant atmosphere all night, even though they’ve had pretty much nothing to get excited about. Fair play.

Hummels earns himself a yellow card for absolutely clattering Alvarez on the halfway line.

Mahrez off, Palmer on. The Algerian really needs to be moved on from penalty taking duties.

21:43 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Dias boots a bit of everything as Brandt comes forward, gets enough of the ball to get away with a brief VAR check.

Gundogan with space for a shot, lifted over the bar. And now the offside flag goes up. Apart from that...

21:39 , Matt Verri

81 mins: At last - Grealish on for Foden. Has to wait for the fourth official to sort the numbers on the board out, maybe could have been done in all that time just standing there.

Modeste on for Dortmund, replacing Moukoko.

21:36 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Rodri well into triple figures for passes tonight, he’s had all the time in the world in midfield.

Grealish has been waiting for almost five minutes to come on - ball hasn’t gone out of play yet. He might need to run on and boot it away.

21:34 , Matt Verri

76 mins: City going through as group winners, Dortmund booking their place in the last 16. That’s how it’s looking with 15 minutes to go, both sides will be happy with a point.

City still probing though, looking for more than that. Haven’t looked hugely dangerous in open play.

21:31 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Adeyemi hammers an effort at goal, Akanji blocks it with his arm at close-range. Whistle goes, free-kick Dortmund and a yellow card for the defender. Bit harsh.

Perfect position this, 20 yards out. Hazard... straight into the wall. Waste of everyone’s time.

21:28 , Matt Verri

71 mins: Brandt leads the Dortmund counter, their first in a while. Not much pace in it, hosts are happy to just keep it.

And now they lost it, Silva can bring it forward for City. Moukoko has got all the way back to halt his progress - brilliant from the forward.

21:25 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Alvarez’s shot is parried straight out, Foden takes a heavy touch though and narrows the angle for himself.

Dortmund under real pressure now, it’s starting to tell. Mahrez volleys the ball across goal, nobody there though and Kobel can dive on it.

21:22 , Matt Verri

64 mins: City are taking increased control of the match now, Dortmund struggling to get anything going on the break.

Visitors pinning them back a bit - Mahrez is on the same side as Guardiola and is getting a look of pure disdain every time he jogs past.

21:18 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Would like to officially downgrade that from ‘brilliant save’ to ‘good save’.

Mahrez strolled up and just smashed it, nowhere near the corner and it’s a relatively routine one for Kobel.

Dortmund look to break, Akanji far too quick and strong for Moukoko.

SAVED!

21:15 , Matt Verri

Does Mahrez ever score from the spot?

It’s a brilliant save to be fair to him, and now the atmosphere has gone up another notch.

PENALTY CITY!

21:15 , Matt Verri

And now Can gives away a penalty.

Dives in as Mahrez cuts inside, brings him down and it’s as clear a penalty as you’ll ever see. Madness.

21:13 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Adeyemi has the entirety of the right side of the pitch to himself in the City half. Bellingham holds it up, lays it back to Can who has to find Ademeyi - takes an age to get the pass away and it’s then incredibly weak.

Cut out and city survive that brief scare.

21:12 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Rodri with the foul and hurts himself in the process. He’s taken a knock to the... groin.

Sure the physios and players standing above him trying not to laugh is making him feel better. He’s back up and fine to continue.

21:10 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Chaos in the City box - they just about survive!

Reyna clips a lovely cross in, just above Bellingham but it falls for Adeyemi. Ake pokes it away from him.

Drilled back into the box, Bellingham tries to divert it at goal, a scramble follows and the offside flag is raised.

21:07 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Akanji flies in on Reyna, he’s keen to make an impression back in Dortmund!

Great challenge, added benefit of bobbling off Reyna and going out for a City throw-in. Job done.

21:05 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Alvarez leading the line by himself now, while Stones has gone into a more central position with Akanji on the right. It’s pretty much a midfield role for Stones.

Bellingham puts the ball behind for a City corner, visitors have started the half well.

Back underway!

21:02 , Matt Verri

Second-half up and running in Dortmund.

Changes from City - Akanji and Silva on for Cancelo and Haaland!

Around Europe

20:56 , Matt Verri

About the only time we’ve seen him...

20:53 , Matt Verri

Not been the return to Dortmund Haaland would have wanted so far, hasn’t had a sniff really in front of goal.

Wouldn’t be a City match without talking about how little he has touched the ball - nobody on the pitch has attempted fewer passes than him.

That’s not a stat he particularly cares about that.

HT: Dortmund 0-0 Man City

20:48 , Matt Verri

It livened up a bit towards the end of the half, after a fairly slow start.

Dortmund with the biggest chance, Moukoko unable to direct his effort on target from close range. Hosts will be very satisfied with their efforts so far.

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Cancelo with a lovely nutmeg on Adeyemi, not for the first time tonight either. Dortmund winger needs to get his own back on that front.

It’s swung into the box, great ball by Foden and Ake powers a header over at the back post.

One minute added on.

20:42 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Match is opening up now, both sides a bit sloppy in possession.

Dortmund’s turn to break, ball played through to Moukoko and he gets a first-time shot away. Easy save for Ortega, who has looked confident on debut.

20:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: City not making the most of their chances in transition. Haaland this time the provider, playing the ball through to Mahrez but it’s a poor touch from the Algerian.

Can wins it back for Dortmund at the other end, goes for goal from miles out. Takes a deflection and loops up perfectly for Ortega.

20:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

Ball played down the line and Adeyemi has got in behind Cancelo.

Squares it across the face of goal, Moukoko completely free in the middle but he guides it wide of the far post. Had to score.

20:35 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Dortmund lose it, Foden fires an early pass in for Haaland.

Opts not to take on Hummels and goes for the shot outside the box instead, blocked by the centre-back. He’s very much had the better of Haaland so far.

20:33 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Brandt looks to find Hummels, Dias gets up well though to head it away.

Better spell from Dortmund, not just letting City have comfortable possession. Ball comes to Bellingham just outside the City box, he slips at just the wrong time.

20:32 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Second City player shown a yellow card, as Alvarez catches Hazard.

He’s been absolutely anonymous so far, first time he’s been seen really. Another Dortmund free-kick, as Rodri shoves Bellingham over.

Up come the Dortmund centre-backs.

20:30 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Too far out for a shot you’d imagine, at least 30 yards.

Gundogan looks to clip it into the box, Hummels is there once again though to head it away. He’s been superb so far.

20:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Haaland drives at the Dortmund defence, Can slides in to halt his progress. Midfielder is so quick to protest his innocence that the referee doesn’t believe him, free-kick given.

Got a fair bit of the ball, but also slid through Haaland.

20:26 , Matt Verri

26 mins: There we go!

Dortmund wake up and it’s a lovely move, Bellingham setting Adeyemi away. He cuts it back for Reyna, his shot is so tame though. Basically a pass to Oretga who gratefully clutches it.

20:25 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Sule and Bellingham combine to intercept Cancelo’s pass, would have set Foden free.

Dortmund very solid in their shape, just not showing a huge amount going forward yet. They’ll be happy enough though, City haven’t created anything.

20:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Another sustained spell of City possession, Dortmund with every single player deep in their own half.

Visitors not moving the ball with any great pace either, which isn’t helping the spectacle. Cancelo is in behind... no he’s not. Offside flag eventually goes up.

20:18 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Superb from Hummels and it’s celebrated like a goal.

Haaland briefly thinks he’s in, but the centre-back sticks out a leg and slides in. Comes to Mahrez, cross into the box and Hummels is there again, throwing himself at the ball and heading it behind.

20:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Ball over the top, Adeyemi in so much space and he’s in on goal.

Opts not to square it, tries his luck from a tight angle and it’s a comfortable enough save. Flag didn’t go up - it would have counter.

20:14 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Bellingham and Haaland had the focus on them going into the match, they’ve had about five touches between them so far.

Hazard brings it forward for Dortmund on the left, comes inside to Can and he gets caught on the ball.

20:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Rodri pings the ball out to Mahrez, it’s a brilliant touch to bring it down.

Worked back to the midfielder, who then does the same thing to Cancelo on the opposite flank. Dortmund with no interest in pressing at all.

20:08 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Cancelo the first man into the book, he’s got a lot of time to spend on a yellow card now.

Pretty poor challenge and he can have no complaints about that. Brandt standing over it, about 25 yards out.

Great effort, even if Ortega was very calm as it flew just wide of the post.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Moukoko turns into space and has Bellingham completely free to his left, but takes too long to pass it and loses the ball.

Would be fair to file the Englishman’s reaction as ‘not impressed’.

20:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Dortmund get their first chance to counter, do so dangerously too.

Stones does well to get back and mop up the danger, ensures it comes to nothing in the end. That’s the Dortmund gameplan there though.

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: No surprise to see City having all of the ball in the opening minutes, Dortmund happy to sit right off.

Cancelo with an ambitious backheel towards Haaland - only problem is Haaland was nowhere near him.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

We are up and running at the Westfalenstadion!

Here we go!

19:57 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch in Dortmund, special atmosphere as ever.

They have to trek all the way to the other side of the pitch for the Champions League anthem - didn’t need to bother with the warm-ups.

Elsewhere in the group

19:52 , Matt Verri

Sevilla cruised past Copenhagen in the early kick-off, lifting them into third in Group G.

It means Dortmund need just a point tonight to book their place in the knockout stages with a match to spare.

If they want to finish top though, all three points are needed against City.

19:48 , Matt Verri

Judging by the City warm-ups, it will be Stones at right-back as expected. Dias and Ake in the middle, with Cancelo on the left.

Never wise trying to predict what Guardiola will do though - could turn out to be anything during the match!

Westfalenstadion... ready!

19:42 , Matt Verri

Not long now!

19:36 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in just over 20 minutes.

Should be an entertaining match, with Dortmund needing to win and City being... City.

Guardiola’s side have been perfect so far this season apart from that trip to Anfield, so it’s a huge task for Dortmund.

Big night for Bellingham

Guardiola expecting brilliant atmosphere...

19:20 , Matt Verri

“It’s a fantastic stadium, everybody knows it,” the City boss said.

“Atmosphere, attractive football they play. When I was here in Germany I played against Klopp and Tuchel and always had difficult games. Fantastic atmosphere, happy to be back here.

“Three years ago we came back in Covid times, which was a pity. I think that game was one of the highlights of my City career, when we won here and went to the semi-finals of the Champions League.”

What could have been...

19:11 , Matt Verri

Former Arsenal scout Brian McDermott admits a deal to bring Erling Haaland to the club was never close despite meeting with the player’s father.

A prodigious talent at Molde, Haaland is believed to have attracted huge interest as a teenager before moving to Red Bull Salzburg, with Arsenal one of many leading clubs to have cast a keen eye over his fledgling career.

The former Reading manager told The Athletic: ““People can say such-and-such a club could have had him, but a lot of it is pie in the sky.

“I watched Haaland three times and I was, like, ‘Blimey, who is this kid?’. I met his dad and we had really good conversations, but I felt they knew the path they wanted for him.

“You can go to a massive club at that age and you can get lost. I’m not saying he would have done, because he was outstanding, but I just sensed he and his dad wanted to do it differently.

“It was already written.”

Terzic sends warning to players

19:02 , Matt Verri

Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic does not want a repeat of the match at the Etihad, when his side conceded twice in the last ten minutes to lose the game.

“We have to improve on what we did in the first leg and this time we have to go through to the last minute,” Terzic said.

“City will play as well as they do against any team in the world.”

Changes from Guardiola

18:53 , Matt Verri

Ortega makes his Man City debut, as Ederson drops to the bench for a rare night off. Stones returns to the side and looks to be starting at right-back, with Ake partnering Dias.

Gundogan and Alvarez come into the side, with Guardiola seemingly opting for two up front as Haaland makes his Dortmund return. De Bruyne and Silva are among those on the bench.

Hazard and Can come into the side for Guerreiro and the suspended Ozcan, while Schlotterbeck is available and starts.

Jude Bellingham looking to continue his recent form - five goals in his last six matches.

Man City team news

18:45 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Ortega, Stones, Dias, Ake, Cancelo, Mahrez, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Foden, Alvarez, Haaland

Subs: Ederson, Carson, Grealish, Laporte, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Akanji, Palmer, Lewis, Wilson-Esbrand

How it stands...

18:35 , Matt Verri

Man City sit top of Group G going into the fifth round of group-stage matches.

Dortmund are three points further back in second - if they don’t win tonight, City will be confirmed as group winners.

Should the Bundesliga side win, both sides will be on ten points going into next week’s final games. Guardiola will not want that!

Guardiola: Bellingham in the perfect place

18:27 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has hailed Jude Bellingham ahead of tonight’s clash, believing the teenager is “something special” as he continues to thrive in Germany.

“Borussia Dortmund is the perfect place for young talent to come,” Guardiola said about the England midfielder. “Maybe if he went to a top Premier League club, he wouldn’t have got the minutes.

“The best thing for young players is to play minutes.

“It’s not just about the quality, it’s about how he was leading and kicking and going to the referee, this guy is something special and has the mentality. He already is one of the captains [at Dortmund], the whole package is really good.

“He’s already in the national team for England at 19-years-old, we know the quality he has.”

Atmosphere building in Germany!

Last time they met...

18:10 , Matt Verri

It was certainly eventful when they met at the Etihad earlier this season!

Jude Bellingham put Dortmund in front, but City turned it around late on and sealed the three points in spectacular fashion - no prizes for guessing who got the winner.

Evening Standard prediction

18:03 , Matt Verri

Playing in Dortmund is never easy but surely City have the firepower – namely through Erling Haaland – to overcome a team who have conceded ten goals in their last six games.

Man City to win 3-1.

Man City team news

17:55 , Matt Verri

For City, John Stones was back in the squad for the Brighton win and could be involved in some capacity. Sergio Gomez, however, is suspended. Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips remain injured.

Much of the focus, as ever, will be on Erling Haaland as he makes his return to Dortmund.

Manchester City predicted XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Akanji, Dias, Stones, Cancelo; Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne; Silva, Haaland, Foden

Nico Schlotterback is a doubt for Dortmund after coming off against Stuttgart, though there is hope over Donyell Malen, although Marco Reus is injured.
