For Douglas Lima, Having the Belt Isn't Enough

For Douglas Lima, Having the Belt Isn't Enough

Having been a year since he won the Bellator welterweight championship, Douglas “The Phenom” Lima has focused on his development, because even though he has a title, he still feels there is more room for growth.

Even with multiple wins in a row, Lima is constantly looking to get better as a fighter.

“Especially for MMA, there’s always something to work on, and every day that I’m in the gym, I think I learn something,” Lima told MMAWeekly.com. “I have great coaches and people around me, so I’m always working so I can compete every day in the gym and that really helps me.

“I just want to take one fight at a time, fight the best and keep looking better. The more I fight, the better I want to look, but there always room for improvement.”

Originally Lima (26-5) was to defend his 170-pound title earlier this year, but an injury forced him to have to wait until July 17, when he’ll face Andrey Koreshkov (17-1) in the Mohegan Sun at Bellator 140.

“He’s a good striker and is fast and long for a welterweight, but I’m feeling confident,” Lima said. “I’m ready to take him on. I feel that I have more power than him, and the longer the fight goes on, the more I’ll be able to try to finish him. Against him – that’s my plan – to go for the finish.”

Even though Lima’s title is on the line, he’s not letting that affect the way he views the fight.

“For me, it’s the most important fight of my life, but that’s how I look at every fight,” said Lima. “There’s no pressure because there’s a title (on the line). I don’t care if it’s a championship or a regular fight. The main thing for me is just go in there and beat him.”

Having been so long since he last fought, Lima is anxious to get the ball rolling on his championship reign as he looks forward to the remainder of 2015.

“I just hope I can get in two more fights by the end of the year,” said Lima. “I’m still young and I want to defend this belt as many times as possible.

“For me, the main thing is staying busy and doing the things I love. I’m just sick of all this time off, it’s kind of depressing, so I’m just happy to be back and hoping to stay busy. It’s good to spend so much time with my family, but I miss my job.”
