This is a breakthrough win for the program’s current iteration under 36-year old coach Jon Scheyer, who replaced the legendary Mike Krzyzewski before last season, USA TODAY Sports columnist Dan Wolken wrote.

One day, we may call Jon Scheyer one of the great college basketball coaches of his generation and be able to look back at this exact moment where it all started.

However, this game turned after an in jury to Houston's most explosive player. With 6:53 remaining in the first half of Friday's game, Houston was in control when Big 12 player of the year Jamal Shead turned his right ankle on a drive to the rim and went to the locker room almost immediately. Though X-rays were negative, the sprain was severe enough that he couldn’t return, completely changing the complexion of the game.

Duke's Kyle Filipowski, a 7-foot sophomore, dominated from that point on. He scored 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. And senior point guard Jeremy Roach had 14 points and several clutch jumpers in the second half.

Still, the game went down to the wire before the the buzzer sounded on Houston's tournament run.
