TWO Isle of Wight Wessex League football sides were back in action tonight (Tuesday) – their final midweek games of the season.

Newport hit the road to take on New Milton Town and got off to a disastrous start.

The hosts took the lead inside the opening minute from the penalty spot.

The Islanders soon settled, and Jared Wetherick forced a save on nine minutes, George Holbrook the provider.

Six minutes on from Wetherick’s headed effort, the Islanders almost levelled through Anthony Kettell, whose shot was blocked.

Parity was restored three minutes thereafter; Sonny Myram the scorer from a corner.

Newport continued to poke a prod but couldn’t take the lead ahead of the break.

Second half, Newport carried on in the same vein, piling on the pressure.

Stopper Leon Pitman was twice called upon to deny New Milton, and the hosts eventually found the breakthrough on 89 minutes.

The game ended 2-1.

East Cowes Vics, meanwhile, made short work of Totton and Eling.

Jez Conway netted on 23 minutes to give his side the lead, and Ji Nash made it two just before the break.

Jake Wright applied some further gloss to the scoreline in the second half.

The game ended 3-0.
