EastEnders's Ben Mitchell makes return following Lola's death

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Ben Mitchell has made a return in emotional EastEnders scenes.

The soap aired a temporary departure for Ben last week when he fled to America to try to get Lola Pearce-Brown into an experimental cancer trial, in spite of the rest of his family begging him to stay.

Ben had phoned to say Lola had been approved for the trial, but it came too late as she was already on her deathbed (and ultimately passed away). Callum chose not to tell Ben the truth but urged him to get home.

Thursday's (June 1) visit to Walford included tragic scenes where Ben's taxi pulled up to the house just as Lola's body was being removed for eventual burial.

Ben broke down as he realised he'd missed his chance to say goodbye to the mother of his child — and found no comfort from Billy and Jay as they were furious about his decision to flee to America as Lola was dying.

"You abandoned Lola, you abandoned your own daughter," Jay seethed. "Now, you have got to live with that!"

He faced more rejection from Lexi, with his daughter running away from him after explaining he wasn't anywhere to be found at the moment she needed him most.

With everyone in his life furious, it was a chance encounter with new Walford resident George Knight that got Ben thinking about how he could make amends.

George approached Lexi in the cafe, with Ben looking on, to tell her: "Your dad's been worried sick about you. About to send out a search party, posters, the works."

He then approached Ben to encourage him not to give up on his loved ones, as he explained his own daughters grew up without a mum.

"It took a long time for me to realise when [they were] pushing me away, all [they] really wanted was a hug," George assured Ben.

Ben then went after Lexi and, after offering an emotional apology for not being there for her, the two shared a loving hug.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
