Eddie Nketiah will miss Arsenal’s clash with rivals Tottenham on Sunday after failing with an appeal over his red card against Leicester City.

The England Under-21 striker was dismissed for a high challenge on James Justin within four minutes of coming on as a substitute at the Emirates Stadium on Monday.

Chris Kavanagh’s straight red card, after consulting VAR and looking at a pitchside monitor, was upheld by the Football Association after the initial decision was appealed, meaning Nketiah will also miss the Premier League clash against Liverpool and the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

He will return for matches against Aston Villa and Watford, plus the FA Cup final should his team-mates defeat the holders at Wembley on July 18.

Nketiah was initially booked for the challenge close to Justin’s knee in the 75th minute, when he was slightly late on a challenge. Jamie Redknapp, working as a Sky Sports pundit on the night, believed it was the correct decision to send him off.

“He's not meant to do him,” Redknap said. “But he has so much enthusiasm and the manager has told him to go and be a nuisance, make challenges. I felt sorry for him but by the letter of the law it was the right decision."

The FA regulatory commission could have increased the punishment to up to double the standard if it had decided the appeal "had no prospect of success" or amounted to "an abuse of process". But he will serve three matches rather than see the punishment changed.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insisted his player should not have been dismissed and questioned whether Jamie Vardy should have stayed on the pitch after appearing to kick Shkodran Mustafi.

"The red card, he [Eddie] cannot see the player and didn't want to hurt anybody,” Arteta said. “You have to understand he is a young kid. It can be a red card but Leicester have to play for ten men after 42 minutes. For one challenge between the 40 and 45 minutes.

"If we review incidents of that type we review them all. It has to be something equal for everybody because it changes the game for everybody. If Eddie is a red card for sure the other is a red card."
