An electronic goods company could lose almost £250,000 if England win the World Cup on Sunday.

England first have to beat Croatia in order to get through to the final against Belgium, but that still leaves HBH Woolacotts looking nervously at the match tonight.

The shop, with nine stores in Cornwall and Devon, offered a special deal to customer that they could have a refund on any OLED TVs bought from 1 May 2018 until 17 June, the start of the World Cup.

Chris Hemmerle, director of HBH Woolacotts admitted that while he, ‘would love to see [England] win the trophy,’ he was undertandably, ‘a little bit nervous.’

Hemmerle said that he and the managing director of the company had conceived the offer, and had since sold almost 140 of the television sets. The cheapest set is priced at around £1,300, leaving the company facing a potentially mammoth set of bills.

However, the director was stoic in the face of losing so much money, and even seem pleased England had got this far:

“It has created a nice talking point. I am not sure people believed it to be honest.

“If they knew what they know now we would have sold a few more.

“I am really hoping we will go all the way as it may never happen again in my lifetime.”

Despite the incurring what could be close to a quarter of a million pounds, Hemmerle was pleased to see England succeeding:

“I think there were a few customers that opted out of the promotion for various reasons but in general there will be a lot of happy customers when the trophy comes home.

“Regarding the value we’d have to pay back – if I’m honest its slightly more than that and closer to £250,000… eek!”
