Ellwood City boys knock off Washington; Roth now at 1,985 points

Feb. 20—WASHINGTON — The Ellwood City Lincoln High boys basketball took control in the second quarter Monday night.

The Wolverines stretched a six-point lead after one period to 14 points at the break and cruised to a 53-36 WPIAL Class 3A road playoff win over Washington.

"I thought tonight we came out and played well for four quarters," first-year Wolverines coach Dan Bradley said. "We controlled the defensive boards and didn't give them second-chance opportunities. We forced a lot of turnovers, too.

"From the offensive end, we did a good job of handling the ball and their pressure. Nate Williams, Christopher Smiley and Joseph Roth all stepped up big for us."

Ninth-seeded Ellwood City (16-7) advances to meet top-seeded Deer Lakes (18-4) on Thursday at a time and site to be determined. The Lancers are the defending WPIAL Class 3A champs and state runners-up.

"They're a good team; we'll have our hands full," Bradley said of the Lancers. "We'll come out and play hard."

The eighth-seeded Prexies finish the season at 15-8.

The Wolverines led 17-11 after one quarter and increased the margin to 29-15 at the half. Ellwood pushed the buffer to 42-27 after three periods.

"I thought we took advantage of some of their turnovers," Bradley said. "We got some easy buckets."

Roth led all scorers with 18 points for Ellwood City and Williams was next with nine. Roth now has 1,985 career markers.

"He had a good game; he was passing the ball and rebounding it pretty well," Bradley said of Roth.

De'Ondre Daugherty delivered 12 points for the Prexies.

Washington was just 5 of 12 at the foul line. The Prexies made just one 3-pointer, which went through the hoop with 1:04 remaining in the game.
