England skipper Joe Root was a desolated man after losing the second Test at Lord’s. India won the game by 151 runs defending 276 runs on the final day. The hosts came from a position of strength to being outplayed on the final day of the Test match. This win at Lord’s gives India a 1-0 lead in the series with three Test matches yet to be played.

Meanwhile, after the defeat, Joe Root congratulated the Indian team and also spoke about where they fell short in the game. He said that he had a lot to think about on the final day and could have done things differently.

“Fair play to Virat (Kohli) and his team. They jumped on to something that emotionally gave them an edge. I think a lot falls on my shoulders as captain. Tactically, I could have done things slightly differently.”

Root further admitted that the 89*-run partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami was pivotal in taking India to a position of victory in the match. He said that the side could have attacked the duo a little more with attacking field placements.

“The (Shami and Bumrah partnership) was the pivotal moment of the game, without question, and I don’t think I dealt with that well enough tactically. It put us in a difficult position. Looking back, I’d look at some of the field placings and the way that we bowled. We could have looked at maybe attacking the stumps a little bit more frequently and using the short ball as more of a surprise.”

The Test match had several moments of India and England’s players going at each other with verbal comments. However, things never went out of hand as the umpires were quick to jump in when things got out of control.

KL Rahul for his 139 in the first innings was awarded the Man of the Match. The second Test starts from July 25 at Headingley.
