Former India cricketer Farokh Engineer believes Virat Kohli should tone down his aggression a bit while lauding him for being an aggressive captain. Kohli earned a mixed reaction for verbal exchanges and aggressive instincts, which was the highlight of the emphatic win against England at Lord’s earlier this week.

After sharing the sessions until day 4, India took the driver’s seat riding on an 89-run partnership between Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. Defending 272 runs, Indian bowlers ran down the English batting with Mohammed Siraj returning with four wickets while Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Farokh Engineer stated that he was among the first Indian cricketers to give it back to the opposition and earn respect. The 82-year-old cricketer said:

“I admire Virat for that. He has been an aggressive captain. It’s good. Of course, it has to be within limits. Otherwise, the umpire or the match referee can intervene.

“Maybe sometimes, yes (should he tone down his aggression?). He gets a bit too carried away, at times. But I like his aggression. He is a very good captain. I am all for it. He is I think one of the finest batsmen in the world,” Farokh Engineer added.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami replied in their own way: Farokh Engineer

Indian tailenders were subjected to hostility as England pacers unleashed a barrage of bouncers against Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. However, their tactics didn’t pay any dividend as Indian cricketers negated the bouncers quite convincingly.

Speaking on the same, Farokh Engineer said that Bumrah and Shami’s replies were humiliating to England.

“Also, they do sledging, so that your batsman lose confidence. But Bumrah and Shami were khadoos (stubborn), they replied in their own way. They couldn’t bat very well but they knew how to survive. By surviving, they got a lot of runs and those runs were very important in enabling Virat to declare the innings. That was humiliating for England,” he added.
