England fans tear into 'spare part' Trent Alexander-Arnold as Euro 2024 gamble backfires

Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to struggle away from Liverpool, with England supporters still failing to appreciate his unique talents. Once again played in midfield by Gareth Southgate, the gamble ultimately backfired.

It's true that Alexander-Arnold failed to particularly impact the game against Denmark. But the whole team looked to be losing its shape and composure when Southgate once again decided that the Liverpool man needed to be the one to come off, hooking him before the hour mark.

And that singling-out process has been even more brutal on social media. Despite the fact that Alexander-Arnold has become more accustomed to taking up central roles since switching to a hybrid role under Jurgen Klopp, England fans have had enough of seeing him start there for his country.

"Trent is a spare part in the middle," posted one fan on X. He proceeded to call for an 'actual midfielder' to be subbed on, which Southgate ultimately did — although Conor Gallagher did little of note other than threaten to get himself sent off with a series of mistimed challenges.

Another branded the decision to use Alexander-Arnold in midfield as 'scandalous'. Yet another England fan 'humorously' suggested that the decision to withdraw the Liverpool man came 53 minutes too late.

In the game itself, the positional gamble clearly did not pay off, with Alexander-Arnold unable to make a telling difference and England ultimately only able to draw. Harry Kane had opened the scoring, but his goal was cancelled out by an excellent Morten Hjulmand strike. The Dane has been linked to Liverpool.

The next question is what comes next for Southgate's grand Euro 2024 experiment with Alexander-Arnold. If he listens to fan sentiment, we might have seen the last of it.

Liverpool.com says: It's pretty obvious that lots of people made up their minds on Alexander-Arnold in midfield before Euro 2024 even started. There was one moment in commentary where he got unceremoniously barged off the ball, only for the nation to be informed he was 'looking for it' and got lucky to be awarded the most blatant free kick you'll ever see.

You fear Southgate was only ever half-invested in the experiment too. That's the second time in a row he's made this change, and this time he hooked Alexander-Arnold within 10 minutes of the second half getting underway. The Liverpool man has not been given anything like a fair chance, and has not been anywhere near as bad as many have suggested.
