Euro 2024 is well underway and some Liverpool players have already featured in the opening weekend of the tournament. Andy Robertson represented Scotland in the tournament opener, as the Tartan Army got swept aside by hosts Germany.

Dominik Szoboszlai played for Hungary, while Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo starred for The Netherlands in its 2-1 win against Poland. England, which has Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez from Liverpool in the squad, will be in action later tonight, as it plays against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

But how much does England players get paid to play for their country? And what do they do with the money?

It was reported during the 2022 World Cup that England players receive around $2,500 (£2,000/€2,300) per match. Of course, in comparison to what the same players earn with their respective clubs, it's minimal. However, players representing England don't actually see any of that money.

Since 2007, an agreement has been in place that sees all match fees donated to a charity called the England Football Foundation. That money is then distributed to various charities, with around $6m (£5m/€6m) believed to have been raised by the England men's national team since the scheme began.

Moreover, there's also a bonus scheme in place should England go all the way and win any major international competition. It was reported by The Daily Mail in the build-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar that each England player would've been in line for $600,000 (£500,000/€590,000) bonuses if they won the tournament, but it was not clear what percentage of that would be given to charity.

This time around, The Mail suggests that Gareth Southgate's players could win a staggering bonus of $17m (£14m/€16m) — to be shared among the squad - should they be victorious this time around.

At club level, Harry Kane is England's best-paid player, with the Bayern Munich striker earning around $525,000 (£415,000/€490,000) per-week at the German giants. Jude Bellingham is next on the line, with the Real Madrid star earning around $436,000 (£345,000/€407,000) a week in the Spanish capital.

Liverpool.com says: It's a positive gesture on the England player's behalf that all of their money is given to charity. At the end of the day, the money they make from the club game is more than enough, and they don't need the financial benefits of playing for their nation.
