England have discovered the nation they will face in the last-16 of the European championships this Sunday. Gareth Southgate's side slumped their way through to the knockout stages as group C winners following a goalless draw against Slovenia on Tuesday.

The Three Lions had already put in a disappointing display against Denmark which saw them drop points after kicking the tournament off with a 1-0 victory over Serbia. Having qualified as group-winners, because of the new format, England were set to take on a team that finished third in their group.

Prior to their final group game, Hungary, Croatia and the Netherlands had all seen their group finish confirmed as third. At the expense of Scotland, Hungary scored a last-gasp goal to give themselves a chance of reaching the last-16.

Croatia meanwhile, suffered heartbreak in the final seconds of their game against Italy with a draw seeing them finish on two points and thus be eliminated from the tournament. In the Netherlands' group, Austria shockingly finished top with France in second, which sees the latter placed on the opposite side of the bracket from England.

While some knockout fixtures are already known, with Belgium vs France, Italy vs Switzerland and Germany vs Denmark all confirmed, England had to wait until Wednesday evening to discover their fate. As every team in group E entered matchday three with at least one win, it was very likely that the team finishing third in that group would qualify on goal difference, barring any heavy defeats.

As every team in Group E went on to draw their final game, Ukraine were brutally knocked out, despite finishing on four points with Romania going through as group-winners on the same total and Belgium in second. That leaves Slovakia in third on four points despite beating Belgium in their opening match.

A chaotic evening in Group F then followed with Georgia beating Portugal while 10-man Czechia thought they had salvaged a point against Turkiye only for Cenk Tosun to score a late winner.

Because of those surprising results, the Three Lions will meet Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen with Romania set for a knockout round clash against the Netherlands. Portugal meanwhile, take on Slovenia while Georgia face Spain and Austria face Turkiye.
