England One Day captain Eoin Morgan insists his side have made huge strides since a terrible World Cup in 2015 – but winning this summer’s ICC Champions Trophy might be beyond them.

Speaking at the launch of NatWest’s ‘Cricket has no boundaries’ campaign, Morgan told Yahoo Sport: “We are with a shout – we have performed well in the past two years but we are not favourites – Australia and to some extent India are better placed at the moment.”

Morgan, 30, will lead the a team that includes Test skipper Joe Root but does not feel the dynamic of two skippers in the same side will create a problem.

He said: “Joe is a fantastic player – he commands huge respect and will be a great leader. He backs it all up with performances which enhance his integrity – there was only one candidate for the job when Alistair stepped down. It will be great playing in the same team as him.”

Morgan also played blind cricket at the launch and revealed he had a hard training session with the blind and visually impaired squad two years ago.

Bullying

He added: “It was more of a bullying session if I am honest- but it was great. They gave me a hard time and really took the mick out of me. They bowl at 60mph and have 60-yard boundaries. It’s incredible.

“Inclusivity has moved on a considerable amount – the sponsors have done a great deal and improved diversity. It also creates great discipline and values in the young.”
