England vs Australia LIVE: Cricket scorecard and Ashes updates as tourists push lead over 200

England vs Australia LIVE: Cricket scorecard and Ashes updates as tourists push lead over 200

England’s costly habit of unforced batting errors reared its head again at Lord’s as they gifted control of the second Ashes Test to Australia.

The tourists, already 1-0 up after edging a nail-biter at Edgbaston, ended day three with a commanding 221-run lead and a platform to make themselves overwhelming favourites to win both the game and the series.

England were knocked over for 325 in a deflating morning session, losing six wickets for 47 as they turned a competitive position into a first-innings deficit of 91. At one stage on the second evening they had looked at ease on 188 for one, but 24 hours later they had a mountain to climb.

While a host of England’s leading batters were the authors of their own downfall, Australia once against trusted a more pragmatic approach as they gritted their teeth in awkward conditions to reach 130 for two.

With the ball nipping around under floodlights and murky skies, Australia’s insistence on a more risk-averse strategy than England’s all-out aggression paid dividends. Usman Khawaja, dropped on 19 by James Anderson, led the way as he did in the first Test at Edgbaston as he compiled a hard-working 58no.

Follow all the action from day three of the second Ashes test match:

England vs Australia

England are watching the second Test slip away – a pivotal Ashes moment looms

18:03 , Mike Jones

Facing Australia was always going to be a different challenge for Bazball England, and on the afternoon of the third day of the second Ashes Test, it just felt like the side that had demolished so many bowling attacks was watching the game slide away from them.

While Australia’s bowlers had wrapped up England’s remaining six wickets for just 47 runs in the morning session, the home side had little of the same bite and pace, despite the usually favourable overcast conditions and the Dukes ball.

England’s desire to play attacking, entertaining cricket at times veers closely to the line of becoming reckless, but on the morning of the third day it arguably went slightly too far.

Day three reaction from Alastair Cook

17:54 , Mike Jones

The former England captain was speaking on Test Match Special about where things have gone wrong for England. He said:

“What has happened here and at Edgbaston is England not having the killer instinct to nail Australia down or to say this is opportunity, we don’t need to hit sixes, we just need to hammer teams down.

“They took scoring runs for granted in the first innings.”

Play abandoned for the day!

The official word has come through that play is done for day three as a combination of rain and bad light mean Australia will have to wait until tomorrow to add to their lead of 221.

Rain stopped play!

17:45 , Mike Jones

Play needs to resume before 6pm - which is around 15 minutes away - or else the umpires will call time on day three. With Australia 221 runs ahead, there’s plenty of time to get a result in this test match.

The weather is supposed to be sunny at the weekend.

Ashes likely over for Nathan Lyon after ‘significant’ injury confirmed

17:35 , Mike Jones

Nathan Lyon’s chances of playing any further part in the Ashes look slim after Cricket Australia confirmed he had suffered a “significant” calf strain.

Lyon had arrived on the third morning at Lord’s on crutches after he had to be helped off the pitch on Thursday evening after pulling up with a calf problem during his fielding stint in the deep.

The Australia spinner, playing his 100th consecutive Test, looked distraught as he hobbled around the boundary edge and, when he joined his team-mates at the ground on Friday morning, his reliance on crutches raised alarm bells over his chances of being fit for the last three Tests of the series.

Rain stopped play!

17:30 , Mike Jones

The good news is that the umpires are out in the middle, one without an umbrella, and are discussing with the ground staff how to get the match back underway.

The rain looks like it’s stopping, if it’s not already stopped.

Jimmy Anderson took the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne in that session. England need eight more wickets before they can go about chasing down the required runs.

Rain stopped play!

Never mind. The extra covers are brought on to keep the square dry too. This may turn into a longer than hoped for break.

Rain stopped play!

17:12 , Mike Jones

Australia are two wickets down with 130 runs on the board and a lead of 221. Usman Khawaja has go to yet another fifty and Steve Smith is also getting his innings going.

The covers have been brought on to cover the wicket but there’s no sign of needing to cover the outfield so the break may not be too long.

Australia 130-2 (45.4), Khawaja 58, Smith 6, Robinson 0-18 (9.4), lead by 221

17:10 , Mike Jones

The light is getting darker and there’s a bit of drizzle in the air. Steve Smith is watching the ball closer as it’s angled into his pads and looks to be moving away from him.

The umpires had a conversation about the light and are taking the players off for rain! The Australian batters waste no time getting off the field.

It’s been another good session for them.

Australia 130-2 (45), Khawaja 58, Smith 6, Tongue 1-21 (9), lead by 221

17:06 , Mike Jones

Just like earlier in the day, England make another bowling change as Josh Tongue returns for a second spell. Usman Khawaja is on strike and he’s tested with a couple of short deliveries but ducks underneath both of them. Khawaja backs away to open up the offside but Tongue follows him and pins the opener on the gloves.

Australia 130-2 (44), Khawaja 58, Smith 6, Robinson 0-18 (9), lead by 221

17:02 , Mike Jones

Ollie Robinson comes back into the attack for England to replace Stuart Broad. England are persisting with their method of shutting off the legside but Robinson isn’t full enough.

He pulls the length back even futher and tempts Smith into a hook. The batter misses the ball and is annoyed as he had the chance to score a boundary.

Robinson’s return starts with a maiden.

Australia 130-2 (43), Khawaja 58, Smith 6, Anderson 1-41 (14), lead by 221

16:58 , Mike Jones

Usman Khawaja rolls a pull shot down to fine leg for another single and brings Steve Smith back on strike. Jonny Bairstow is up to the stumps and there are men stopping a single on the legside. Smith whips the ball through square leg and picks up one.

Australia 128-2 (42), Khawaja 57, Smith 5, Broad 0-39 (13), lead by 219

16:53 , Mike Jones

Mark Taylor says that the key to getting Steve Smith in trouble is to bowl full and straight early on. England have a couple of fielders behind the wicket on the legside as Smith comes across his stumps. He’s trying to open up the space in front of square but Broad double bluffs him.

A delivery passes the outside of the off stump as Smith is committed to fending at the ball. He misses it and tells Broad that that was a good delivery.

Smith is then struck on the pads but the ball is tracking past leg and the umpire calls it not out.

Australia 128-2 (41), Khawaja 57, Smith 5, Anderson 1-39 (13), lead by 219

16:49 , Mike Jones

Close! England have a leg slip in place for Steve Smith who is the new batter. Anderson angles one down the legside and Smith flicks the ball fine of the fielder for four runs!

He takes a single off the last ball and will keep the strike.

Wicket! Marnus Labuschagne ct Harry Brook b James Anderson 30 (51), Australia 123-2 (40.1)

16:44 , Mike Jones

A short, wide ball from James Anderson catches Marnus Labuschagne’s eye but he slaps a cut shot straight to Harry Brook at backward point.

Anderson has a wicket and Australia are two down!

Australia 123-1 (40), Khawaja 57, Labuschagne 30, Broad 0-39 (12), lead by 214

16:42 , Mike Jones

After the lbw decision went against him in the previous over Stuart Broad decides to target the pads with another inswinger. Labuschagne has grown in confidence and whips the ball through square leg for four runs!

He then turns another straight one into the legside for a single. Five from the over.

Australia 118-1 (39), Khawaja 57, Labuschagne 25, Anderson 0-34 (12), lead by 209

16:37 , Mike Jones

Usman Khawaja guides the ball through point for a single. Marnus Labuschagne then lines up Jimmy Anderson and flicks him to deep midwicket for two more. A wayward delivery is turned to fine leg for four before Labuschagne pushes the ball through the legside and takes three.

It’s becoming easier for him to score now.

Australia 108-1 (38), Khawaja 56, Labuschagne 16, Broad 0-34 (11), lead by 199

16:33 , Mike Jones

That’s a loose one! Stuart Broad forces the ball wide of Usman Khawaja’s stumps and gets him to play a false shot. He drives but misses the ball completely much to Broad’s frustration.

Khawaja dabs a ball into the offside and takes one to bring Labuschagne back on strike. Broad flings down an inswinger and traps Labuschagne bang in front.

He appeals but the umpire says not out. Ben Stokes decides not to review but the replays shows the ball was going to hit.

Australia 107-1 (37), Khawaja 55, Labuschagne 16, Anderson 0-24 (11), lead by 198

16:29 , Mike Jones

England’s bowlers would probably prefere to bowl at Marnus Labuschagne. He’s looked the more vulnerable of the two batters in these conditions. Anderson directs one into Khawaja’s pads and allows the batter a single. Labuschagne then has to contend with Jonny Bairstow standing up to the stumps.

A dragged down delivery from Anderson is easily cut away by Labuschagne who is ever so slowly getting into his work.

Australia 102-1 (36), Khawaja 54, Labuschagne 12, Broad 0-33 (10), lead by 193

16:24 , Mike Jones

Broad isn’t happy with the footmarks were he’s landing as he hits the crease. The ground staff are called on to do some repairs which just about helps out.

Khawaja takes one more from the over.

Australia 101-1 (35.3), Khawaja 53, Labuschagne 12, Broad 0-32 (9.3), lead by 192

16:19 , Mike Jones

Stuart Broad comes around the wicket to Usman Khawaja and bangs a short ball into the wicket that the opener ducks underneath. A floaty full toss is the drilled down the ground for four and Khawaja brings up another 50!

He moves to 53 from 105 balls. Australia also bring up their 100.

Australia 97-1 (35), Khawaja 49, Labuschagne 12, Anderson 0-19 (10), lead by 188

16:16 , Mike Jones

Usman Khawaja pushes a back foot punch through point and takes two runs to move closer to a half century. A short jab across the ball brings him another one.

With Marnus Labuschagne on strike Anderson gets one to boom back into the right-hander who turns to the ball to the fielder at midwicket.

Four leg byes also come from the over.

Australia 90-1 (34), Khawaja 46, Labuschagne 12, Broad 0-28 (9), lead by 181

16:12 , Mike Jones

Jimmy Anderson’s over started with a four and so does Stuart Broad’s. He angles one into Usman Khawaja’s pads and the ball deflects straight down to the fine leg boundary for four leg byes.

The opener then has to check a straight drive as the ball moves off it’s line. An inside edge takes it into the legside allowing the batters to come through for a run.

Evening session: Australia 85-1 (33), Khawaja 45, Labuschagne 12, Anderson 0-16 (9), lead by 176

16:07 , Mike Jones

James Anderson gets the evening session underway with a loosener that Marnus Labuschagne pulls away to the boundary for four!

Anderson responds with one that shoots up off a good length and whizzes past the edge of the bat leaving Labuschagne wide-eyed. That one surprised him.

It’s a nice response from Anderson after the first ball as five dot balls follow.

Tea: The brief spell before lunch with the ball moving around and Broad and Anderson in the attack held so much promise for the afternoon session, but ultimately it fell short.

Australia have done what England could not, and weathered the storm and took their time.

It almost feels like the Test is slipping away from Stokes’ side as they struggle to make inroads into the Australian attack, who reached the break at a relatively comfortable 80 for one.

There were two moments of excitement in the final over, with two big appeals for England, first for a caught behind and secondly for an lbw, but neither given, and the home side rightly chose not to use up any reviews.

Australia 81-1 (32), Khawaja 45, Labuschagne 8, Broad 0-27 (8), lead by 172

15:45 , Mike Jones

A shock bouncer from Stuart Broad surprises Usman Khawaja who ducks under the ball a little awkwardly. Khawaja turns a pull shot over to deep square leg for a single to leave Labuschagne a couple of deliveries from Broad’s over.

Stuart Broad goes full and wide and Labuschagne chases the ball. He drives and misses but England think there’s an edge. Broad in particular is convinced but the umpire turns them down.

The final ball of the over hits Labuschagne on the pads but there’s an inside edge and the batters scramble through for one.

Australia 79-1 (31), Khawaja 44, Labuschagne 7, Anderson 0-12 (8), lead by 170

15:39 , Mike Jones

Maiden for Anderson who continues to probe the outside of Marnus Labuschagne’s bat. The Australian batter is content enough to let the ball go by.

Australia 79-1 (30), Khawaja 44, Labuschagne 7, Broad 0-25 (7), lead by 170

15:34 , Mike Jones

England’s seamers are bowling in tandem. Stuart Broad comes back to replace Ollie Robinson. He starts around the wicket to Usman Khawaja and gets a hint of shape away. There’s conversation between Broad and Ben Stokes which results in the man at backward point moving into gully.

It looks as though Broad will try to find the edge of Khawaja’s bat and bring the slip cordon into play. Broad is too short and Khawaja, annoyingly, cuts the ball into the new gap at point to collect a boundary.

Broad has just one fielder on the legside so has to throw the ball wide. He does and Khawaja steps into a drive to pick up consecutive boundaries.

Australia 71-1 (29), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 7, Anderson 0-12 (6), lead by 162

15:29 , Mike Jones

Josh Tongue is blowing out on the boundary so Ben Stokes changes it up and reintroduces James Anderson into the attack. Marnus Labuschagne is on strike and looks to get on the front foot. Anderson pulls the length back slightly yet sends the ball wide of off stump.

Jonny Bairstow calls for a helmet and stands up to the stumps for Anderson to keep the Australian batters in their crease. Labuschagne rocks back to a shortish ball and pulls it into the legside. Stuart Broad is a midwicket but the ball just sneaks past him and runs away for four.

Australia 67-1 (28), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 3, Robinson 0-18 (8), lead by 158

15:24 , Mike Jones

Usman Khawaja looks a bit more proactive by shimming down the pitch at Ollie Robinson. He falls back on a solid forward defence but there was a bit of intent to go at Robinson. The bowler responds by coming back over the wicket and pushing the ball across the left-hander.

Three maidens in a row.

Australia 67-1 (27), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 3, Tongue 1-21 (8), lead by 158

15:21 , Mike Jones

Back to back maidens for England. Josh Tongue has bowled an eight over spell and it’s wearying on the body. He’ll be full of confidence though and I bet Ben Stokes has a tough time getting the ball out of his hands.

Australia 67-1 (26.2), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 3, Tongue 1-21 (7.2), lead by 158

15:18 , Mike Jones

Labuschagne survives! Ball tracking shows that Labuschagne was hit outside the line of off stump so can’t be given out. Still, it’s another sign that things aren’t easy out there.

Australia 67-1 (26.2), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 3, Tongue 1-21 (7.2), lead by 158

15:16 , Mike Jones

Review! Josh Tongue gets one to nip back into Marnus Labuschagne and whacks him on the pads. Height could potentially be an issue so the batter sends it upstairs.

Australia 67-1 (26), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 3, Robinson 0-18 (7), lead by 158

15:15 , Mike Jones

Ollie Robinson’s main threat in this innings has come from the extra bounce he’s getting off a good length. Khawaja hangs back in his crease and plays the ball late. An edge falls short of the slips but keeps England interested.

Robinson bowls a maiden.

Australia 67-1 (25), Khawaja 36, Labuschagne 3, Tongue 1-21 (7), lead by 158

15:10 , Mike Jones

Marnus Labuschagne is the new batter. He struggled to start in the first innings but powered through to record a half-century. Josh Tongue strays too straight and Labuschagne gets off the mark with a push into the legside for three runs.

Four runs but more importantly a wicket for England come from Josh Tongue’s over. Can the hosts go on to get a couple more now?

Wicket! David Warner lbw Josh Tongue 25 (76), Australia 63-1 (24.1)

15:06 , Mike Jones

Got him! Warner has to go as there’s no bat involved and ball tracking shows three reds. Josh Tongue gets rewarded for some disciplined bowling.

Australia 63-0 (24.1), Khawaja 35, Warner 25, Tongue 0-17 (6.1), lead by 154

15:04 , Mike Jones

Josh Tongue thinks he’s got David Warner. He comes round the wicket and traps the opener on the pads. The umpire raises the finger and Warner reviews the decision immediately.

Have England got the breakthrough?

Australia 63-0 (24), Khawaja 35, Warner 25, Robinson 0-18 (6), lead by 154

15:03 , Mike Jones

A guided edge from David Warner brings him four runs as he picks the gap between third slip and backward point. Australia’s lead stretches over 150.

Robinson puts in an effort ball and gets some extra bounce. It worries Warner who dangles out the bat and misses it by mere centimetres.

A pull into fine leg brings Warner one and he’ll keep the strike.

Australia 58-0 (23), Khawaja 35, Warner 20, Tongue 0-17 (6), lead by 149

14:58 , Mike Jones

Four runs! A full-faced punch down the ground from Usman Khawaja brings four runs to the opener as Josh Tongue over pitches. He responds with a bouncer that forces Khawaja to duck.

It’s been a more disciplined bowling session from England. They’re trying different things but for the most part are being consistent with their lines and lengths.

Australia’s openers have been equally as good.

Australia 54-0 (22), Khawaja 31, Warner 20, Robinson 0-13 (5), lead by 145

14:54 , Mike Jones

Ollie Robinson is honing in on David Warner’s pads. It’s the first time in a few overs that he’s bowled at Warner and the method of attack he’s choosing is to bring the ball back into the left-hander. Two runs takes Warner into the 20s and a couple of leg byes means four runs come from the over.

Australia 50-0 (21), Khawaja 31, Warner 18, Tongue 0-13 (5), lead by 141

14:50 , Mike Jones

This has been a testing innings for David Warner. He hasn’t quite found his timing yet and with the ball moving about he’s not trying to be too expansive.

A late cut from Warner sends the ball up the hill but the slow outfield limits the batters to two runs. A surprise short ball is taken on by Warner who isn’t in control of the stroke. He flaps it into the legside but the ball lands safely and Australia’s 50 comes up.

Australia 47-0 (20), Khawaja 31, Warner 15, Robinson 0-11 (4), lead by 138

14:43 , Mike Jones

The temperature just seems to be dropping slightly and there’s a nice breeze coming across the ground. It’s a good time to bowl with the ball moving around off the pitch. The batters need to be watchful against Robinson. He’s getting some extra bounce but still England can’t find the edge of the bat.

Another maiden goes by as the drinks are brought on.

Australia 47-0 (19), Khawaja 31, Warner 15, Tongue 0-10 (3), lead by 138

14:40 , Mike Jones

Tongue is deliberately trying to get the ball to go up the slope. It’s visible with his wrist action as he deliveries the ball. The fingers slide down the left side and he pushes it towards the slips.

Khawaja picks up one but Warner misses out on a cut shot. He goes too hard at the ball and can only collect two after a mistimed cut finds the gap.

Australia 44-0 (18), Khawaja 30, Warner 13, Robinson 0-11 (3), lead by 135

14:35 , Mike Jones

A front foot punch from Warner sees him collect three as he drills Robinson down the ground. Ollie Pope is the chasing fielder and he can’t slide to keep the in play due to the dodgy shoulder. Instead he stands on the ball and keeps the runs down to three.

Khawaja then flicks the ball into the legside and sends it wide of Pope. Pope drops to the ground to try and stop the ball but jars his shoulder and has to leave the field. Khawaja picks up another three runs.

This may just be a sign that batting is getting slightly easier.

Australia 38-0 (17), Khawaja 27, Warner 10, Tongue 0-7 (3), lead by 129

14:31 , Mike Jones

Josh Tongue has bowled some great balls in this test match and sends another down to Usman Khawaja. David Warner had previously taken a single and the final ball of the over lands and nips up the slope, away from the left-hander, before missing the edge and going through to Jonny Bairstow.

Khawaja can only smile.

Australia 37-0 (16), Khawaja 27, Warner 9, Robinson 0-5 (2), lead by 128

14:27 , Mike Jones

It’s a tighter line from Ollie Robinson as he tries to take the ball away from Usman Khawaja. They tend to pitch on middle of leg stump and jag past the outside of the bat.

Robinson sends down a maiden as the clouds come in giving it a glum atmosphere over proceedings. That seems to match England’s mood.

Australia 37-0 (15), Khawaja 27, Warner 9, Tongue 0-6 (2), lead by 128

14:23 , Mike Jones

Warner gets one away through wide mid-on and picks up a couple of runs as Ollie Pope keeps the ball from crossing the boundary. Tongue moves his line wider and hangs the ball outside off stump but Warner isn’t interested in playing.

Just the two from the over.

Australia 35-0 (14), Khawaja 27, Warner 7, Robinson 0-5 (1), lead by 126

14:19 , Mike Jones

Ricky Ponting has been on record saying that he doesn’t think Ollie Robinson has been very threatening in the series so far. Robinson’s wickets have mainly come from the lower order so he’ll want to claim a few top order scalps in this innings.

He comes round the wicket at David Warner and targets the pads. Warner is waiting for the ball and works it to fine leg for one. A leg stump half-volley then brings Usman Khawaja an easy boundary and he guides it through midwicket for four.

Robinson certainly wasn’t too threatening in that over.

Australia 30-0 (13), Khawaja 23, Warner 6, Tongue 0-4 (1), lead by 121

14:14 , Mike Jones

Josh Tongue replaces James Anderson at the Nursery End. Tongue dismissed both openers in the first innings and is called on by Ben Stokes to make something happen.

Dropped! Usman Khawaja takes on the short ball and hooks it through midwicket. Jimmy Anderson is waiting but the ball bursts through his hands and runs away for four! It was a sharp chance but a chance nonetheless.

Four from the over.

Michael Vaughan tears into England batting display

14:11 , Jack Rathborn

Vaughan told Test Match Special: “Ben Duckett said something last night that alarmed me.

“He said: ‘If we hadn't taken it on, Australia will feel they've won the battle'.

“What utter nonsense! It's Test match cricket.”

Australia 26-0 (12), Khawaja 19, Warner 6, Broad 0-17 (6), lead by 117

14:11 , Mike Jones

There’s a huge grin on David Warner’s face as he twice plays down the line only for the ball to nip away and pass his outside edge. Broad is interested but there’s been no luck for the England bowler so far.

Warner, still standing outside his crease, prods forward and solidly defends the next couple before Broad switches things up with a yorker that the opening batter digs out.

Good contest and a good over from Broad.

Australia 26-0 (11), Khawaja 19, Warner 6, Anderson 0-8 (6), lead by 117

14:06 , Mike Jones

David Warner wants to nibble. Jimmy Anderson is getting a decent amount of carry through to Jonny Bairstow and is offering tempting deliveries outside off stump.

Warner’s first instinct is to feel at the ball but often in this innings he’s pulled back and let it go by. An inside edge bobbles off his pads and brings him one.

Australia 25-0 (10), Khawaja 19, Warner 5, Broad 0-17 (5), lead by 116

14:02 , Mike Jones

Lovely from Khawaja. He hangs back in his crease and plays through the line whilse waiting for the ball. Broad is full and Khawaja punches him down the ground for four!

The Australian opener goes back into his bubble of concentration as Broad changes the angle to come over the wicket. The ball is sent across him and Khawaja leaves it alone.

Four from the over.

Australia 21-0 (9), Khawaja 15, Warner 5, Anderson 0-7 (5), lead by 112

13:58 , Mike Jones

Batting isn’t easy out there with the ball moving slightly. Warner goes for a booming drive but his bottom hand twists as he hits the ball and turns it into the legside.

Warner is busy at the crease. He’s moving back and across the crease trying to find some momentum. Jimmy sends the ball wide and Warner is so far out of the crease that it becomes a full toss which he then misses out on.

Anderson bowls a maiden.

Australia 21-0 (8), Khawaja 15, Warner 5, Broad 0-13 (4), lead by 112

13:53 , Mike Jones

Four runs! Stuart Broad returns and comes around the wicket to Usman Khawaja. He hangs the ball just outside off stump and finds the edge of Khawaja’s bat. The ball flies underneath Zak Crawley and runs away for four.

Broad then overcorrects and strays too straight allowing Khawaja to flick the ball down to fine leg for another boundary. The runs are coming freely for Australia.

Eight runs from the over.

Australia 13-0 (7), Khawaja 7, Warner 5, Anderson 0-6 (4), lead by 104

13:47 , Mike Jones

Review! James Anderson comes round the wicket to David Warner and angles the ball into the pads. There’s a couple of noises as Warner is trapped in front. The umpire turns down England’s appeal but Ben Stokes is convinced to send the decision upstairs. The replay shows a thick inside edge onto the pads.

Warner survives, England lose a review.

Afternoon session: Australia 13-0 (6.3), Khawaja 7, Warner 5, Anderson 0-7 (3.3), lead by 104

13:45 , Mike Jones

Jimmy Anderson has the ball in hand once again. He comes over the wicket to Usman Khawaja and gets the ball to swing away. When it pitches, the ball bounces low and scoots through to Jonny Bairstow, is that a sign of some variable bounce?

Khawaja takes one to get off strike and leaves David Warner three deliveries to see out.

Lunch: Australia 12-0, lead by 103 runs

The hover cover was brought on to keep the pitch dry at the start of lunch. There’s a little bit of drizzle around but not enough to delay the game.

The players stride back out to the middle with Australia in total control.

Harry Brook’s dismissal seems to sum up England’s approach to the short ball in their innings. They’ve got things to work on ahead of the next time they go out to bat.

Australia 12-0 (6), Khawaja 6, Warner 5, Broad 0-5 (3), lead by 103

13:03 , Mike Jones

Stuart Broad gets one to kick up off a length to Usman Khawaja who plays it well and gloves the ball into the legside before calling David Warner through for a single.

Oh that’s great! Warner shuffles across the stumps and smokes Broad through cover for four to end the session on a high for Australia.

They lead by 103 runs.

The start of the Australian innings was one of those times in cricket where the scoreboard doesn’t do justice to the occasion.

England had the ball moving everywhere, both David Warner and Usman Khawaja were struggling, but crucially they were unable to make the breakthrough.

Stuart Broad bowled two overs without going for a single run, as Australia survived to reach lunch 12 without loss, with a lead of 103.

England will hope for similar conditions when they restart after lunch, and in a game of small margins, just one delivery needs to catch the edge.

Australia 7-0 (5), Khawaja 5, Warner 1, Anderson 0-6 (3), lead by 98

12:59 , Mike Jones

Usman Khawaja is nice a patient against some nice bowling from James Anderson. The bowler is slightly too full and Khawaja leans into a full faced drive that brings him four runs. He then pushes Anderson to mid off on the next ball and scrambles through for one more.

David Warner sees out the final couple of deliveries without too much trouble.

Australia 2-0 (4), Khawaja 0, Warner 1, Broad 0-0 (2), lead by 93

12:55 , Mike Jones

Stuart Broad gets the ball to jag back at David Warner and beats him on the inside edge. The next ball moves away and misses the outside edge much to the bowlers frustration.

The crowd are getting a bit excited too after a glum morning for England. It’s another maiden for Broad.

Australia 2-0 (3), Khawaja 0, Warner 1, Anderson 0-1 (2), lead by 93

12:52 , Mike Jones

Done him! Anderson gets one to shape away before it pitches and nips back at Usman Khawaja. The opener plays down the wrong line and misses the ball but it flies past the off stump and goes through to Jonny Bairstow.

England are in this game. They need to get a few wickets while the ball is moving around.

Australia 2-0 (2.3), Khawaja 0, Warner 1, Anderson 0-1 (1.3), lead by 93

12:50 , Mike Jones

Australia’s first runs come from a leg bye as Usman Khawaja is hit on the pads by Jimmy Anderson. David Warner then gets off the mark by squirting the ball into square leg for a single.

There’s a bit of nibble for Anderson. He’s trying to move the ball away from Khawaja from over the wicket and hoping there’s some deviation off the seam as well as through the air.

Australia 0-0 (2), Khawaja 0, Warner 0, Broad 0-0 (1)

12:47 , Mike Jones

Oh my! Stuart Broad seems up for it as he storms in to bowl at David Warner. A fizzing, seaming ball flies past the outside edge before an attempted cut is chopped into the slip cordon.

England need a bit of magic and perhaps Broad can provide it?

Warner leaves the last two balls alone as Broad starts with a maiden too.

Australia 0-0 (1), Khawaja 0, Warner 0, Anderson 0-0 (1)

12:45 , Mike Jones

Jimmy Anderson starts with a maiden as Usman Khawaja is characteristically unconcerned with anything wide of his off stump. A couple of deliveries are angled into the pads but Khawaja can’t work the ball away.

Start of innings: Australia 0-0 (0.1), Khawaja 0, Warner 0, Anderson 0-0 (0.1)

12:39 , Mike Jones

It’s a quick turnaround between innings and the players are back on the field. England will open up proceedings through James Anderson who could really do with some wickets in this innings.

Usman Khawaja is on strike. He leaves the first ball alone.

End of innings: England 325 all out

12:34 , Mike Jones

It’s been Australia’s morning and they’re now in a fantastic position to go on and win this test match. There are over two and a half days of the match to go and the tourists lead by 91 runs.

They’ll bat for the rest of the day and now think about getting England back in to bat at some point on Saturday. England need to bowl them out for as few runs as possible to have any chance of winning.

Sonia Twigg at Lord’s

12:32 , Sonia Twigg

It’s hard to look past the critics sometimes and today may be one of those days. England’s tactics will undoubtedly be put under a microscope.

They were 188 for one, and on the morning of day three lost six wickets for 47.

Some wickets were earned, but the majority, were not. It was a case of poor-decision making and poor execution.

England will also be hope Stuart Broad is okay after being hit just under the grill by a Cameron Green bouncer.

The home side need wickets.

Wicket! Josh Tongue ct Renshaw b Cummins 1 (4), England 325 all out

12:31 , Mike Jones

Pat Cummins senses the opportunity to bowl England out and takes it. He bangs a short ball in to Josh Tongue who fends the ball off to the substitute fielder Matt Renshaw at short leg.

England are all out for 325.

England 325-9 (76), Anderson 0, Tongue 1, Head 2-17 (7)

12:27 , Mike Jones

Two wickets and a run from the over. England have lost five wickets for 47 runs this morning.

Wicket! Stuart Broad lbw Travis Head 12 (24), England 325-9 (75.5)

12:26 , Mike Jones

Head gets Broad as well. After taking the blow to the head Broad looks to sweep the offspinner and misses the ball completely. It thunders into his pads and is going on to hit the stumps.

Wicket! Ollie Robinson ct Alex Carey b Travis Head 9 (10), England 324-8 (75.1)

12:22 , Mike Jones

Another one! Ollie Robinson doesn’t fancy hanging around. He comes down to the track to Travis Head, swings wildly and edges the ball through to Alex Carey who takes a great catch behind the stumps!

England 324-7 (75), Broad 12, Robinson 9, Head 0-16 (6)

12:20 , Mike Jones

Broad seems to be okay but he won’t fancy another blow to the head. Expect him to go after the next few short balls that come his way.

Travis Head is continuing though for a bit of spin.

England 324-7 (75), Broad 12, Robinson 9, Green 1-54 (9)

12:19 , Mike Jones

Oh hello! Cameron Green continues and Ollie Robinson whips a full ball over the leg side for a boundary! He’s then pushed back with a couple of bouncers before a pull shot brings another single.

Ouch! Another bouncer from Green rises sharply and pins Stuart Broad on the head. It looks as though this one snuck under the grill and clipped Broad on the jaw.

That’s a painful one and Broad needs a medical check before play can continue.

England 319-7 (74), Broad 12, Robinson 4, Head 0-16 (6)

12:14 , Mike Jones

With Nathan Lyon injured, Travis Head is brought on for a bit of spin. The new ball is due in six overs time so Pat Cummins is giving his seamers a bit of a rest.

Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad decide the time is right for a bit of aggression. Nothing comes off the middle of the bat but the tail is beginning to wag for England.

Wicket! Jonny Bairstow ct Pat Cummins b Josh Hazlewood 16 (36), England 311-7 (72.2)

12:07 , Mike Jones

Gone! England are in trouble now. A full ball from Josh Hazlewood lights up Jonny Bairstow’s eyes and he goes for an expansive drive through the legside. He doesn’t connect well and floats the ball up to Pat Cummins at mid-on for an easy catch.

Sonia Twigg at Lord’s

Drinks: That was an eventful first hour, and England, to the dismay of many pundits carried on where they left off the night before.

Ben Stokes was caught second ball of the day, admittedly not going for a bit shot, but just squared up trying to turn it into the leg side, and Cameron Green, as he has done so often, took another stunning catch.

Then it was Harry Brook, who brought up a first Ashes half century, but did not look comfortable against Mitchell Starc’s pace from the short ball, and had already been dropped on 25 while trying to play the pull shot.

Brook was out for 50 from 67, Starc had another, and England were left floundering slightly at 293 for six.

Trailing by 105 after the first hour, they will have to hope to put on the runs, with Jonny Bairstow supporting the bowlers.

England 311-6 (72), Broad 9, Bairstow 16, Green 1-49 (8)

12:02 , Mike Jones

Four for Broad! Cameron Green is introduced into the attack and gets his second delivery wrong. It’s wide and too full which allows Broad to smoke him over the offside for a boundary. The follow up is banged in and Broad guides it past gully to collect one and get off strike.

A single for Jonny Bairstow off the final delivery sees him keep the strike as drinks are brought onto the pitch. There’s no doubt that this first hour has gone Australia’s way though.

The wickets of Ben Stokes and Harry Brook are big moments in this innings.

England 305-6 (71), Broad 3, Bairstow 15, Hazlewood 1-69 (12)

11:58 , Mike Jones

The first change of bowling this morning sees Josh Hazlewood replace Pat Cummins at the Pavilion End. Cummins sets a more orthodox field for Jonny Bairstow with a couple of slips and men out in the deep on the legside for the occassional bouncer. Bairstow drives square of the wicket and collects one to bring up England’s 300.

They’re going to need a few more runs before they can think about winning this game.

Loose! Hazlewood pulls his length back at Stuart Broad who looks to hook him away. A top edge flies down to third man and brings a single after landing well short of the fielder.

Four runs! A much needed release for England comes from Bairstow who guides the ball wide of the two catchers in the slip cordon and away to the third man boundary for four.

England 299-6 (70), Broad 2, Bairstow 10, Starc 3-88 (17)

11:52 , Mike Jones

Stuart Broad’s main issue is around his hip. He likes to shuffle across and get inside the line of the short ball, when he stands his ground though he can get above the bounce and guide it down. There’s a silly mid-off in place for the catch though which makes things trickier.

A very sharp bouncer rises quickly at Broad who awkwardly ducks underneath it. The umpire signals for a wide as the ball bounced over the head of the 6ft 4’ Broad.

Starc’s desire to trouble the batters sees him overstep the crease for a no-ball which brings England ever closer to 300. The two extras are the only runs from the over.

England 297-6 (69), Broad 2, Bairstow 10, Cummins 0-46 (16)

11:47 , Mike Jones

This is not the time Stuart Broad wants to bat. A bouncer barrage isn’t what he likes at all. Not every ball is getting banged in but there’s enough pace and bounce to trouble the batters when it is.

Bairstow and Broad collect a couple of runs from Cummins’ over.

England 294-6 (68), Broad 1, Bairstow 9, Starc 3-86 (16)

11:42 , Mike Jones

Stuart Broad is the new batter for England and gets off the mark with a push into midwicket for one. Mitchell Starc bangs another one in at Jonny Bairstow who just leans back and lets the ball fly through to Alex Carey.

Wicket! Harry Brook ct Pat Cummins b Mitchell Starc 50 (68), England 293-6 (67.4)

11:39 , Mike Jones

Got him! Mitchell Starc’s short balls are working a treat. He directs one at Harry Brook’s body as the batter tries to open up the offside again.

Brook slaps one into the cover region but doesn’t catch it well and loops it straight to Pat Cummins who clings onto the ball.

England 293-5 (67.3), Brook 50, Bairstow 9, Starc 2-85 (15.3)

11:37 , Mike Jones

The field now suggests that Australia will target Jonny Bairstow with some short stuff too. There are men out in the deep and a short leg in place. Bairstow rides the bounce and turns the ball into the legside for one.

Harry Brook looks to score over the offside. He steps outside leg and tries to lift one over cover but mistimes the shot and scuffs it into the pitch.

England 292-5 (67), Brook 50, Bairstow 8, Cummins 0-44 (15)

11:35 , Mike Jones

50 for Harry Brook! Pat Cummins puts a man in close to test Brook out with another short delivery but he swivels on it well and turns the ball down to fine leg for one to bring up a well earned half-century!

Jonny Bairstow picks up a single too. England are slowly chipping away at the runs they need. They trail by 124.

England 290-5 (66.2), Brook 49, Bairstow 7, Cummins 0-42 (14.2)

11:29 , Mike Jones

Good running from Harry Brook! Jonny Bairstow handles a short ball well and manages to keep the ball down as he gloves one into the offside. Brook sees the that the fielders are slightly deep and calls for Bairstow to come through for one.

Cummins then pings one into the deck. It’s a heavy ball that clips Brook’s gloves before smacking into the side of his helmet.

There’s going to be a break here while Brook goes through a concussion test.

England 289-5 (66), Brook 49, Bairstow 6, Starc 2-84 (15)

11:26 , Mike Jones

Australia certainly think there’s a weakness to Harry Brook’s game against the short ball. Mitchell Starc hurries him with three bouncers before Brook flicks one off his hip for a single.

Starc then comes round the wicket to Jonny Bairstow who leans on a half-volley and pushes the ball to the fielder at mid-on. The last ball of the over is banged in and Bairstow fancies it.

He goes for the pull and top edges the ball into the gap at square leg. There’s two men on the boundary but it falls short of both and Bairstow picks up a run.

England 287-5 (65), Brook 48, Bairstow 5, Cummins 0-41 (14)

11:22 , Mike Jones

Take care Jonny. Pat Cummins continues as finds a bit of variable bounce which scoots the ball low up the pitch. Bairstow gets an inside edge on the ball which rattles into his pads and gets the Australians excited for half a second.

Bairstow defends the rest of the over. This has been a decent start to his innings as Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have found their rhythm from the get go.

Nathan Lyon update

11:18 , Sonia Twigg

It’s not quite news, but a Cricket Australia spokesperson has just said: “Nathan Lyon has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain.

“He will require a period of rehabilitation after this match is concluded. A decision regarding his availability for the remainder of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game.”

So it’s not really any news, but it doesn’t sound good for the bowler.

England 286-5 (64), Brook 48, Bairstow 5, Starc 2-82 (14)

11:17 , Mike Jones

Smart batting from Harry Brook. He’s forced onto the back foot from a shorter delivery off Mitchell Starc but rises above the ball and dabs it into the offside before calling Jonny Bairstow through for one.

Bairstow goes after a wide delivery and drills a drive to the fielder at mid-off. He nailed that one but couldn’t pick the gap!

A short arm pull brings him a single and he’ll keep the strike for the next over.

England 284-5 (63), Brook 47, Bairstow 4, Cummins 0-40 (13)

11:12 , Mike Jones

Harry Brook looked a little erratic against the short ball yesterday evening so Pat Cummins tests him out early this morning. Brook rolls his wrists over the ball and works a controlled pull into backward square leg for one.

It’s a different tactic to Jonny Bairstow. Cummins hammers away on a good length in and around off stump. Bairstow is up to the task and solidly keeps the ball out.

Two overs bowled.

England 283-5 (62), Brook 46, Bairstow 4, Starc 2-80 (13)

11:07 , Mike Jones

Jonny Bairstow gets off the mark with a lovely cover drive. He leans into the shot and times it wonderfully through the gap to pick up four. That will ease any nerves he may have had.

This duo of Brook and Bairstow have a lot of work to do. England wouldn’t have been expecting to lose Stokes so early in the day. A big partnership is needed.

Wicket! Ben Stokes ct Cameron Green b Mitchell Starc 17 (57), England 279-5 (61.2)

11:04 , Mike Jones

Mitchell Starc strikes an early blow for Australia as he gets the England captain with just the second ball of the day. A bit of extra bounce draws a leading edge from Stokes’ bat and flies through to Cameron Green in the slips!
