England 0-2 Australia LIVE! Grant goal - International friendly result, match stream and latest updates today

Goals from Sam Kerr and Charlotte Grant earned Australia a 2-0 win over England at a rainy Brentford Community Stadium on Tuesday to end a 30-match unbeaten run for Sarina Wiegman’s team.

With 100 days to go before co-hosting the World Cup with New Zealand, the Matildas returned to winning ways after their friendly defeat by Scotland on Friday thwarted a seventh straight win.

Kerr opened the scoring in the 32nd minute capitalising on a poor clearance by defender Leah Williamson to coolly slot home, despite appearing to be offside as there was no VAR in place.

Australia’s counter-attacking play paid off and Grant doubled the lead in the 67th minute with a header that bounced off Williamson, who had a night to forget, and into the net.

The Lionesses pressed but could not find a way past a solid Australian defence, as they lost for the first time under Wiegman’s tenure.

Australia play France in a friendly on July 14, before their World Cup opener against Ireland six days later. England kick off their World Cup campaign against Group D opponents Haiti on July 2

Wiegman responds as England fall to meek defeat to Australia

22:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Sarina Wiegman insists England can learn from their defeat to Australia ahead of the World Cup.

100 days before the tournament begins in Australia and New Zealand, the Lionesses were dealt their first defeat of the Wiegman era.

Goals in each half from Sam Kerr and Charlotte Grant on a rainy night in west London condemned England to a rare loss.

The Lionesses struggled to scale previous heights at Brentford’s Gtech Communiy Stadium and were lucky to come away having only lost by a two-goal margin.

It is the first major disappointment for the Dutchwoman, coming only days after watching her team win the first ever Women’s Finalissima after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Brazil.

England reminded they are beatable as listless Lionesses lose unbeaten streak

22:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

Their adopted anthem reminds Lionesses fans that “Good times never seemed so good.” Perhaps now that England have lost for the first time in 31 matches under Sarina Wiegman, it will sink in just how good their 19 months under their Dutch manager have been.

England limped to a self-induced 2-0 defeat to Australia, and as it was unfolding, it never once felt as though they might turn the tide and turn it around.

100 days from the World Cup, against the world’s 10th-best side and the co-hosts, Australia were supposed to provide a stern test for the Lionesses. They proved perhaps a little sterner opposition than desired.

Alessia Russo volleyed wide, acrobatically, and Lauren Hemp showed poise and precision when beating defenders and crossing from the right flank early on. But under the whistling wind and rain at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, England eventually lulled to a level at which they remained firmly stuck for much of this friendly.

England player ratings vs Australia: Leah Williamson at fault as Keira Walsh has off-day

21:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

England were beaten by Australia on Tuesday night as their 30-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end.

Australia were worthy winners at the Brentford Gtech Community Stadium, scoring in either half to claim a 2-0 win.

Sam Kerr opened the scoring after 32 minutes when she pounced on an error by captain Leah Williamson and Charlotte Grant found the net after the break.

The defeat is England’s first under Sarina Wiegman and it also ends their 30-game unbeaten run, which proceeded the Dutch woman taking over.

Lionesses lose unbeaten streak under Sarina Wiegman

21:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

England were beaten for the first time under Sarina Wiegman as Australia ran out 2-0 winners at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.

While perspective is needed given their stunning success under Wiegman, England were dealt something of a reality check.

Chelsea forward Sam Kerr, rested for the Matildas’ shock loss to Scotland on Saturday, pounced when Leah Williamson did not put enough on a header back to Mary Earps in the Lionesses goal.

It was a world class finish and a reminder that, for all of their progress, even the slightest mistake can be punished by moments of quality.

In the pouring rain in west London, the home side struggled. Without Mille Bright and Alex Greenwood in defence, they struggled with a more direct approach and little about their passing game proved convincing.

When Charlotte Grant drifted in at the back post and saw her header deflected off Williamson and past Earps, it was little more than Australia deserved.

Ten minutes to go!

80 mins: Something, anything from England could at least mitigate the disappointment somewhat.

That goal just about sums up England’s night. They’ve been off the pace all game and Australia have punished them. Need something special now.

68 mins: Grant is found at the back post and her header is deflected off Williamson past Earps.

CHANCE FOR ENGLAND!

58 mins: England improving somewhat, with Kelly at the heart of it. Her cross, however, was collected well by Arnold.

England suffering without Alex Greenwood in the heart of defence. They’re lacking composure on the ball and struggling to build from the back.

England living very dangerously early in this second half. With better finishing, Australia could be home and hosed by now. England’s 30-match unbeaten run now seriously under threat

A pretty scrappy game to be honest. England not got going, even more so since Hemp went off. Error led to Australia goal, which Kerr took well. Lionesses trailing for only the third time under Wiegman.

HT: England 0-1 Australia

20:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

Much more needed in the second-half from England.

CHANCE FOR ENGLAND!

20:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

45 mins: Saying that, they still have Lauren James.

She drifts inside, leaving defenders in her wake before hitting a shot just over.

Very poor for far

20:31 , Jonathan Gorrie

44 mins: Hard to think of a worse performance under Wiegman thus far. England have been so sloppy all evening.

A reminder there is no VAR or Goal Line Technology in use tonight. That Kerr goal looked offside, or if not very close. A blow for England.

Dom Smith at the Gtech Community Stadium

That was a goal out of nothing. Sam Kerr, rested in Australia’s defeat to Scotland on Friday, back to haunt many of her WSL colleagues here. Bad error from Leah Williamson. England behind under Sarina Wiegman. A rare sight.

Think Lauren Hemp may have to come off here. She is wearing a face mask, after injuring her nose last week, and is struggling with her breathing. Lauren James getting ready.

England getting success down the sides

22 mins: Nice cutbacks from Hemp and Stanway in the opening stages have caused problems so far, with Australia defending well in central areas.

It’s been a scrappy opening 20 minutes here. Neither team can keep the ball once they win it. Needs a good chance for the game to burst into life, you feel

CHANCE FOR AUSTRALIA!

16 mins: Poor squad ball from Walsh allows Raso in, although Morgan eventually blocks the shot.

Let of the hook there.

Can confirm that Wiegman is braving the rain. No umbrella a la Steve McClaren. Not even got her hood up.

Absolutely tipping it down here at the Gtech Community Stadium. Very windy too. Thank goodness Australia are in yellow and England in their brand-new bright blue away kit. Without that, trying to actually see what’s happening would be hopeless!

CHANCE FOR ENGLAND!

19:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

09 mins: Hemp crosses for Russo, who sees her shot on the stretch saved.

Almost a quick England break

Nothing given.

England and Australia players raise Alzheimer’s Society awareness

19:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

A third of the England and Australia players taking part in Tuesday’s friendly had no names on their shirts to show support for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The match, which was the Lionesses’ final one before Sarina Wiegman names her squad for this summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, had been dedicated as an ‘Alzheimer’s Society International’.

One in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia and to raise awareness of that the same number of players on Tuesday night had no names on their shirts.

Different players wore the nameless shirts after half-time, to draw attention to the confusion and memory loss often experienced by those living with dementia, before being auctioned. Fans are being encouraged to engage with the stunt using the hashtag #TheForgottenThird.

Kate Lee, Alzheimer’s Society CEO, said: “We hope by making this simple alternation with this gesture and getting both teams to show a sign of solidarity, we can put an important spotlight on just how much dementia can devastate lives.

“I hope it makes a massive impact from the stands to screens, inspiring people to donate so we can reach even more people with our life-changing support, which helps people through some of the hardest and most frightening times.”

Wiegman: England won’t take Australia lightly despite Scotland result

18:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

While Australia were on the receiving end of a shock against Scotland on Saturday, Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman has insisted her team won’t be taking them lightly.

“Australia have had some very good results. The game against Scotland doesn’t really represent what they have done over the last few months.

“They are very physical and very direct. It is a little different to what Brazil did but still very challenging.”

Williamson hopes FA scheme can unearth stars and increase diversity

17:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

England captain Leah Williamson hopes the FA’s Discover My Talent programme can unearth stars of the future and increase diversity in the women’s game.

The programme was launched by the FA in August 2021 to widen the pool of players who may be scouted and brought into the England pathway.

Players from all over England from different backgrounds and communities can be referred to the programme and there have already been success stories.

Of the 1000s referrals made, 356 players have been described by the FA as “a real talent of interest” and 75 are now part of a group of players being considered for squad selection for England age-group teams from under-15 to under-17.

Wiegman has key Lionesses dilemma in final World Cup audition

17:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

It is 100 days until the Women’s World Cup starts, and tonight marks another important step on England‘s road to the finals.

The Lionesses are facing World Cup co-hosts Australia at Brentford‘s Gtech Community Stadium and it is the last chance for players to impress before head coach Sarina Wiegman names her squad for the tournament.

Wiegman insisted during February’s Arnold Clark Cup, which England won, that she did not know her best XI, but the picture has become clearer since then.

Much of the team to face Haiti on July 22 in England’s World Cup opener largely picks itself, especially in defence and midfield.

Bronze admits change in penalty plan as Kelly steps up again

17:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

England defender Lucy Bronze has revealed her and Leah Williamson were the reason behind Chloe Kelly’s penalty heroics against Brazil.

Kelly scored the final and winning spot-kick as the Lionesses beat Brazil 4-2 on penalties in the first ever women’s Finalissima on Thursday night at Wembley.

Bronze, however, has revealed how Kelly was actually due to go seventh in the shootout before her and Williamson intervened to change the order of takers.

“You won’t know this story, but they showed us the order for the penalties and I was sixth and Chloe was seventh,” Bronze told the BBC.

“And Leah was meant to be in the five and Leah was like: ‘Chloe needs to be in the five’. And I was like: ‘Yeah, she does!’

“So they put her third and I said: ‘No, no, put Chloe fifth, she’s going to score the winner’. I promise you [that’s what happened].

“Leah switched her in and I said: ‘Put Chloe fifth, she’s going to score the winner’. Afterwards I said to Chloe: ‘I told you that you were going to score the winner!’ It’s just Chloe Kelly and winners at Wembley, that seems to be a thing!

“We all trusted in the process and I think penalties is something that we have done a lot of work on. It’s nice to have put that work into action.

“Mary did some unbelievable saves, I think she nearly got her hands to another one actually as well.

“The girls stepped up and were brave and confident. We had total belief that Chloe was going to seal the deal. She knows how to perform under pressure.”

England’s win over Brazil extended their unbeaten run to 30 games and provided them with a good test as they build towards the World Cup this summer.

They had been on course to win in 90 minutes after Ella Toone, who missed in the shootout, opened the scoring in the first-half.

Brazil, however, equalised in injury-time through Andressa Alves and that sent the game to penalties.

“To be fair, when we looked at the list [of takers], we thought, those players are incredible for us,” said Williamson. “Mary, we know how good she is in goal. So actually I wasn’t worried at all.

“We had a little conversation about it (the order of takers), but just to make sure everybody was good.

“I don’t think anyone in this team would shy away. Everybody is ready to step up and take responsibility, and the execution was perfect.”

Sarina Wiegman: Wembley feels like home for relentless Lionesses

17:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

Sarina Wiegman says Wembley “feels like home” after the Lionesses beat Brazil on penalties to win the inaugural edition of the Finalissima on Thursday night.

A sell-out crowd of 83,132 watched on as Ella Toone’s first-half goal was cancelled out at the death by a late leveller from Andressa, which took the match straight to penalties.

Mary Earps had made an error in the lead-up to Brazil’s equaliser but responded by saving Tamires’s penalty, helping England on their way to a 4-2 penalty shootout victory secured when Chloe Kelly converted the decisive spot-kick, sending England on their way to lift their fourth trophy of their Dutch manager’s tenure.

“Of course it feels like home,” Wiegman said about Wembley — where England won the Euros last summer by beating Germany in the final in extra-time.

“We have so many great memories here. It’s really enjoyable to play here. It’s a historic stadium too. We’ve played Northern Ireland, Germany and now Brazil. Those are the opponents you want to play against in an environment like this.”

Prediction: England to win 3-1

17:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

England continue to answer any questions asked of them under Wiegman, even on the rare occasions when they have come under pressure and been forced to respond.

Kerr will ensure Australia offer a real threat up front, but the Lionesses have the quality and the confidence to keep the winning feeling going.
