There were boos again at Wembley but they were only fleeting and only because Jack Grealish was substituted having played a crucial role in securing England’s top spot in Group D and, with it, at least one more game at their home stadium in Euro 2020.

The fans clearly did not take in the fact that Gareth Southgate was saving Grealish, given the shin problems he has suffered over the past few months, for the last-16 tie next week. Will the play-maker be retained? It certainly looked like he did enough although Phil Foden comes back into the reckoning. Foden was rested here and left out of the match-day squad of 23 as he is on a yellow card.

Even so, if Mason Mount, who will also now be available but surely will not start given he cannot work with his team-mates in the meantime, had not been forced to go into isolation after his ‘close contact’ with Billy Gilmour then Grealish probably would not have been in the team for this final group game against the Czech Republic.

But his selection – along with that of the outstanding Bukayo Saka, who also has to be factored in, and the fit-again Harry Maguire whose ability on the ball has been sorely missed – gave England the freshness they needed after their frustrating goalless draw against Scotland which had cued the previous, more serious opprobrium of the fans.

The narrow victory means that England progress with seven points from nine, with just two goals scored but with three clean sheets, and the difficulty is still trying to assess how good they are or, indeed, even what the team will be next Tuesday when they face the Group F runners-up. That has to be a little uncomfortable entering such a vital stage of the competition.

Take these two facts: England won a group at the Euros for only the third time – but did so by becoming the lowest scoring team ever to finish first. So – is your glass half full or half empty? We may only know this when victory is being toasted or sorrows being drowned after another early exit.

But there were further positives – another goal for Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane edging back to form and the return of Jordan Henderson and, in effect, these group games have served as glorified warm-up matches before the real action begins. Or so England hope. We do not even know for certain which shape they will play in – 4-3-3 or the 4-2-3-1 they used here to greater effect or even 3-4-3?

After an impressive first-half they meandered far too much and far too worryingly towards the win and did not even have a shot in the second period, bar a disallowed offside effort by Henderson, as they risked allowing the Czechs back into the contest when it should have been over. That was not good game-management and better opponents would have seized the reprieve and made them pay… and we know they are round the corner. Southgate has to hammer home the need to be far more ruthless and intense.

It was the failure to build on the powerful start that was maddening. England could have scored three goals but, instead, they fell away a little too much to assuage all doubts and debates and that tapering will have irritated the manager.

Grealish has, inadvertently, become something of a poster boy for the naysayers as has Jadon Sancho who came on as a late substitute for his first involvement in the finals and whose introduction was met with roars of pointed approval. It shows the tightrope Southgate is walking with some supporters even if the final whistle was also met with cheers.

Undoubtedly England will now have to dramatically raise their game to a level we have not seen yet to get past France, Portugal, Germany or Hungary, depending how their group ends, and reach the quarter-finals. Maybe that game will be the marker they still have not laid down in this tournament in the way that other nations such as Italy and Belgium have done. If England cannot do that at home then they cannot do it anywhere.

They certainly appeared stung by the criticism post-Scotland. There was an air of determination; a shape; a plan and a purpose as they kicked off. Points were there to be proven as well as earned and almost as pleasing as Sterling’s header hitting the net was the sight of him and Grealish later sprinting back to prevent a counter-attack after Saka was dispossessed – it should have been a foul – on the edge of the Czech penalty area. They both threw themselves into tackles, winning a throw-in.

It was those three players, and Kane, along with Kalvin Phillips, who combined for England’s goal. Saka started it with the kind of positive, line-breaking run from deep that we have not seen from England in these finals and he exchanged passes with Phillips before crossing. Grealish headed it down to Kane who returned the ball with Grealish standing up a superb cross to the far post which Sterling drifted in to head home from close-range.

England were in front and there was a chorus of “football’s coming home” – what a shift in mood already from Friday night’s ire – and it could have been Sterling’s second goal of the match and not just the tournament. Inside two minutes he had been picked out by Luke Shaw and beat Tomas Vaclik to the ball, lifting it over the goalkeeper with it rebounding off the post and evading the onrushing Saka.

It meant that England had struck the goal-frame three times in their group games with, quirkily, each effort from a Manchester City player. It was one from Manchester United who then fashioned another opening with an incisive pass through midfield by Maguire, the kind of pass England have missed, finding Kane who cut inside with Vaclik smartly saving his shot with an outstretched left hand. Kane beat the turf in frustration.

But that was it. The rampaging full-backs stopped rampaging, the Czechs found a foot-hold and it was they who went close with a couple of half-chances as England looked like they were gently applying the handbrake in a second-half where minds began to focus on who might be their next opponents rather than pushing on to ensure this result was secured.

Southgate, for the first time in this tournament, even used all five substitutes as if he, too, was making a point having been questioned over his conservatism in making changes. In the end he can file this one under ‘Job done’ but also in the knowledge that the real task now begins. A big week awaits him and England.

England's manager Gareth Southgate

"We started really well. Stable with the ball. Some of the things we had worked on we had to change overnight - huge credit to the players that they were as stable as they were. We got the shout during training (about the Covid) so we hadn't finalised everything... super impressed with Bukayo both with and without the ball.

Czechs very good side, use ball, hard to break down. We haven't scored with a set play yet and they are crucial in big matches so we have to get those nailed. We are not fluent yet but we are having moments where we look a good side.

France, Germany, Portugal would all be different tests. 90 for Harry M good, 45 for Hendo. Those three sides, all different tests.

Great to have more supporters in, for sure. We wanted to win the group, we wanted to stay at Wembley."

"I said at the start of the competition that keeping clean sheets is the template for going far in the tournament, so it's a positive to have gone through without conceding.

Another positive is giving minutes to those who have not been playing and resting players for later in the competition.

The worry is the level in the next game will go up tenfold. Pickford has not had much to do. Let's be honest, the competition really starts next week."

Full time: Czech Republic 0 England 1

Decent win, that. Exciting and pacy first half, tested but not really rattled in the second half. England probably deserved it, all in all. And they do deserve to top the group: two wins and a draw, three clean sheets. Sterner tests await, sure, but things are going pretty well so far. We'll have live reaction and then a report here.

08:50 PM

90 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

There will be three minutes added on. England lose the ball in a risky area and Kral goes for the spectacular. No. Just... no. Miles over.

Vydra of Burnley comes on as the Czechs see if they can batter their way to an equaliser. That goal for the Croats pushes the Czechs into third, I think.

Saka comes off, getting perhaps the warmest applause of the night. Super performance from a brilliant young talent. Seems a nice young man as well. Sancho is on.

Pickford plays his defence into trouble with a shonky clearance. Pekhart cannot capitalise, and shoots wide.

Jamie Carragher's half-time verdict

This has been much better from England. Most reassuring has been how much more energy there has been compared to the Scotland game. I thought they looked tired on Friday night. Not today. Sterling has been particularly outstanding, scoring and hitting the post.

The three players who have come in have made a big difference - Saka and Grealish behind Kane were both involved in the build-up to the goal. Don't overlook the impact of Harry Maguire. His passing from the back really helps get the team moving forward quicker.

07:56 PM

First half summary

  • England lead at the break thanks to a 12th minute header by Sterling

  • Saka and Grealish justify Southgate's team selection

  • England on course to finish top of the group

07:50 PM

Half time: Czech Republic 0 England 1

The ref brings a very encouraging half of football to an end. Sterling hit the post and then netted as England made a hot, direct, pacy start. They stretched the opponents, they ran at them, and they gave a good account of themselves.

That said, the Czechs didn't panic, they are still in this, and they've had some moments of their own.

07:40 PM

38 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

No question that England are a better side when they move quickly. Saka with a run, the buzzing Shaw takes it up, crosses. Corner. Cleared.

Much as it would be lovely for England to keep the ball, there's never any doubt in my mind that they look most themselves, most comfortable, most useful when they play quick, direct transitions and use their pacy runners. It's probably never quite going to be enough against a truly classy opponent, but it at least gives them a puncher's chance.

Waves of England attacks here. Fluid, direct. Grealish, Shaw, Kane all delivering in decent balls and sooner or later one of them will find a killer pass I think.

07:36 PM

35 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

Really close! Ooh England. Lucky not to concede there. Ball into the England area, Sampdoria's Jankto swings a boot at it... nearly removing Luke Shaw's head from his shoulders in the process. England are flapping .... it drops to Soucek.... he's put it wide! A major let off there.

Kane might not have his best shooting form, but you cannot fault the effort here. He battles and battles to win a ball here on the edge of the box. The ball hits the ref and there's an uncontested drop ball. Czech's recover and clear.

07:33 PM

32 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

England look to hit on the break, young Saka tears down the right, gets his head up and sees Sterling... the cross is deflected behind for a corner.

07:32 PM

30 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

Useful spell from the Czechs, this. Plenty of the ball, neat little interchanges, in England's half... the English holding firm thus far. Masopust playing some nice passes.

England make a meal of clearing from a corner and the ball was bobbling alarmingly there in the English box..

07:29 PM

Now Kane and Sterling team up, and Harry has a good hard shot on the target. Maguire involved in the build up. Kane beats the turf in frustration.

They have to settle for a corner, but that is beaten out.

07:24 PM

22 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

The Czechs are under pressure but they are not crumbling. They've got some serious players.

Nice move from them here, down the right, Masopust crosses and Walker carefully, very carefully, chests that back the keeper at the far post.

Shaw takes the corner, it falls to Saka on the edge of the area, Saka knocks it past an opponent and is brought down. The ref, alone in Wembley, reckons that Saka dived there. I really don't think he did. Boril I think the man who tripped him. Saka protests. No booking though so not the end of the world.

07:16 PM

15 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

England look really bright, full of beans. Walker runs 40 yards to close a man down, the Czechs are rattled, and Grealish has it - and Grealish is fouled. Handy position for a freekick. It's a poor freekick from Saka but the Czechs turn it behind for a corner.

07:14 PM

13 mins: Czech Republic 0 England 1

England's fans and manager and media and everyone wanted a positive, attacking, high tempo start and that is what they have got.

07:13 PM

GOAL! Czech Republic 0 England 1 (Sterling 12)

YES Raheem! A nice run from Saka opens the game up, and the ball is played by Kane out to Jack Grealish who darts down the left, moves away from a couple of defenders and stands it up at the back post for Raheem Sterling. Raheem is there at the back post to nod it home.

07:10 PM

"The boys up til now have done a great job. We never want to not score. We want to put a smile on peoples faces and entertain the crowd."

Jamie Carragher on the England team

Saka’s inclusion is the big surprise. No one saw that coming this morning. Southgate has gone for more pace in the side. As I said yesterday, it makes sense to include Maguire to get him up to match speed. Grealish should enjoy himself behind Harry Kane. Obviously, it’s a big night for England captain. He is in to build-up form. It’s not just about whether he scores, but his all-round performance needs to step up.

Gareth Southgate

Chilwell and Mount "are of course disappointed, but we just have to get on with it. It is a bizarre situation. They have spent 120 seconds too long in a fairly open space, it is full of contradictions for me. Frankly, I don't understand it at all. There are teams travelling around in buses and planes for hours in enclosed spaces... and our two boys have been pinged for something that is, you know... yeah.

"As I said yesterday I have no issue for Steve and Scotland, I don't want them to have any issues, it seems a bizarre situation."

"Phil is on a yellow card and there is a chance we will miss two players for the next round and I don't want to risk a third. Shame but sensible decision.

"It is a rarity in tournament football in that there is a prize - we want to stay at Wembley. A great night for our attacking players to the express themselves. We want to play winning football. But the consequence of doing less well is not fatal."

"Difficult call because Tyrone has been a colossus for us but Harry has been our bedrock and has been the best English defender in the League."

Plenty of West Ham interest here tonight. The Basmati Busquets of course at the back of the England midfield, and then the formidable Czech pair of Coufal and Soucek.

Team news analysis

Jack Grealish gets his first start of Euro 2020, as England manager Gareth Southgate deal with the fallout of losing two of his players to self-isolation.

Phil Foden and Tyrone Mings both make way; Mount and Chilwell obviously miss out due to isolation Covid reasons.

Southgate is presumably satisfied that Harry Maguire is fit. Foden is not even on the bench - so there's clearly a story there.

England's path/fate

The man Julian Bennetts has done the hard yards so that we don't have to...

If England win the group they will face the runner-up in Group F at Wembley next Tuesday at 5pm.

Group F fixtures

Germany v Hungary (Munich, 8pm)

Portugal v France (Budapest, 8pm)

So, who could they play?

Germany

What needs to happen: Both games to end in a draw, or for France and Germany to both win

Opta's chance of happening: 42.3%

France

What needs to happen: Germany beat Hungary and France fail to beat Portugal

Chance of happening: 29.3%

Portugal

What needs to happen: Germany to beat Hungary and Portugal to beat France

Chance of happening: 25.8%

Hungary

What needs to happen: Hungary to beat Germany and France to beat Portugal

Chance of happening: 2.6%

If England come second in the group they will face the runner-up in Group E in Copenhagen next Monday at 5pm.

Group E fixtures

Slovakia v Spain (Seville, 5pm)

Sweden v Poland (St Petersburg, 5pm)

So, who could they play?

Sweden

What needs to happen: Sweden draw with Poland and either Spain or Slovakia win their match

Chance of happening: 22.4%

Slovakia

What needs to happen: Both games end in a draw or both Sweden and Slovakia win

Chance of happening: 20.2%

Spain

What needs to happen: Spain beat Slovakia and Sweden beat Poland

Chance of happening: 22.6%

Poland

What needs to happen: Poland beat Sweden and the other game ends in a win for either Spain or Slovakia. A draw in the other game would mean Sweden, Slovakia and Poland being separated on goal difference

Chance of happening: 34.8%

If England lose tonight and come third ...

This is where it gets complicated. It all depends on which combination of four Groups have third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stages, which will only be known once the final games in Groups E and F take place tomorrow. But there are two possible outcomes.

England v Holland in Budapest on Sunday at 5pm

This is the most likely opponent for England, with three of the four combinations of Groups seeing England face the Dutch.

England v the winner of Group E (one of Sweden, Slovakia, Spain or Poland) on Tuesday at 8pm in Glasgow

For this to happen the third-placed teams in both Groups E and F would need to get at least three points and end up with superior goal differences to Ukraine (currently minus-one)

England take on the Czech Republic

at Wembley with an 8pm kick off, the build up is underway, and we will bring you all of the stories and team news ahead of the big match.

As is the way with these short tournaments with easy qualifying sections, there is a lot of speculation as to whether England are better off finishing first or second in their group. Results last night, not least the mighty Danes, mean that England, with four points in the bag, are definitely going through as one of the best third placed teams no matter what, so it's then all about who you face in the upcoming rounds. If you want to have a tinker with the possible routes then you might enjoy Who is your Euro 2020 winner? Map out the tournament with our predictor tool

As for England's team news to face Czech Republic, Gareth Southgate was handed an unfortunate but surely hardly insurmountable problem with the news that Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount had been near club teammate Billy Gilmour. Their Scottish pal has returned a positive Covid Test. Nobody seems to quite understand why these two English guys are isolating but the rest of the Scotland squad, who presumably have been around Billy much more / more often, are carrying on regardless. As ever, Ben Rumsby and Tom Morgan are on top of it as much as anyone.

Why Scotland players do not have to isolate, but Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell do?

And chief football wallah Jason Burt says that other teams will be watching the whole Covid thing nervously.

Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell's self-isolation serves as a warning to the entire tournament

England obviously will have no truck in public with the idea that they might avoid some tough matches finishing second, and this guy reckons it's all baloney anyway. I haven't crunched the numbers myself but I seen this on the internet so it must be true.

Talking of Scotland, my colleague Charles Richardson will be blogging their match against Croatia at the same time of this and we'll naturally be keeping abreast of events in that match and how they relate to the group standings from an England perspective.
