Former England player David Lloyd has stated that Team India’s refusal to play the final Test match in Manchester has denied James Anderson the opportunity of playing at his home ground for one last time.

The fifth Test in Manchester was canceled after an outbreak of Covid-19 cases in the Indian squad. Four members including head coach Ravi Shastri returned positive results in their RT-PCR tests which made the Indian players apprehensive about playing the match.

The news was announced just a couple of hours prior to the scheduled start of the match, which had the fans fuming. Anderson, for whom it would have been the 167th Test, was gearing up to play at Old Trafford but was denied the opportunity by India, as per David Lloyd.

It might be that India’s refusal to fulfill their commitment and play the final Test denied Jimmy Anderson a final hurrah on a ground which bears his name at one end,” Lloyd wrote in the Daily Mail.

Anderson continues to lead the England pace attack at the age of 39. He played in all four Test matches against India, and also managed to cross Anil Kumble’s tally of 619 wickets in the process. Although he will be gutted about the cancelation of the Manchester Test, he will move on quickly.

He might not make another England appearance at his home of Emirates Old Trafford, although if you know Jimmy, you will realise there will be no fuss. The lad’s from Burnley – they don’t do fuss.

They’re tough people from his neck of the woods and he won’t want a fanfare. He’s a warrior and would have pushed himself forward once again, just as he has all summer, bowling an excessive number of overs because England cannot bat,” Lloyd added.

The Ashes will be held later this year but it’s yet to be confirmed whether James Anderson wants to play against Australia.
